Rome: Best Maps
Looking for recommendations for a detailed map to do some walk planning prior to arrival. The tourist maps I have now lack many side/cross streets and are in real small print. Eyesight is the second things that goes!
I'm thinking it would be best to have a booklet type that covers each district in closer detail. I've seen these recommended before: Roma Tour, Knopf mapguide, National Geographic and Streetwise. |
Hi
I am normally a Streetwise fan, but for Rome I found that it didn't have enough detail for me--several small passageways or alleyways that I needed weren't marked. It's still good for a general bird's eye orientation, as is the Insight map. For a lot of detail and lessening of eyestrain, I loved Michelin's 5X8" map/booklet Roma Tascabile, one area on each page. Amazon carries it, and the others mentioned above. |
We chose National Georgraphic mainly because it was easy to read, the fonts were larger than other maps and it is also laminated.

Thanks for the feedback - any other recommedations out there?

Rough Guide has the best maps, IMO

Hi
If you get a chance, check out the Cadogan guide to Rome. It's broken down onto the different areas of Rome, each with a individual map for walking. It is fairly large print, which is important to me also. Each area map also includes recommendations for lunch, pastries etc. Looked at all the maps I could find in the bookstores and this was the best suited for us. Enjoy alan |
I don't normally carry my Eyewitness guides with me, but in Rome I did and it was incredibly useful. There are neighborhood maps with descriptions of everything you find on the streets. It wasn't that big and I just kept it in my purse. It had even my tiny Vicola on it and I never got lost.
Everyday I just set out walking with little plan or method to my madness and discovered so much. |
Someone here suggested the Roma Atlante Tascabile from Michelin before we went to Rome and it was perfect. I ordered it on Michelin.com but Amazon probably has it too.
The Streetwise Rome was pretty good also. There are cute little magnifying glasses you can hang around your neck that might help small type. Enjoy your trip. ((@)) |
Is there a Rome equivalent of "Paris Par Arrondissment"?
|
The Roma Atlante Tascabile would be the closest match to Paris par arrondissement . . . my favorite Paris map, BTW. ((@))

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
I'm going to go with the Roma Atlante Tascabile. Being a planner by nature, I'll most likely get a second map(single sheet) as a back-up and also to mark transportation points. |
For your small map, try the Streetwise Rome. It slips easily into a pocket or purse and is quite thorough.
Enjoy your trip! ((@)) |
