Rome at Night Alone

Hi, I'm a 40yo married woman who will be by herself in Rome for six nights. Any suggestions on 'safe' but fun things to do?
Thanks
Melissa

You could go to a concert or take an evening walking tour. How late at night are you planning for? Do mean in the evening? You can walk around the Trevi fountain, Piazza Navonna area, stop for a gelato or a glass of wine in a cafe. Other areas that might be interesting are Campo dei Fiori and the main square in Trastevere.

Where are you staying and how far do you want to venture from your hotel? What is your idea of fun?

I find I usually don't have much energy left at night. It's dinner and a walk back to my hotel/apartment and shortly to bed.

Hi - I was in the same boat. I had a great time - I went to the opera - and it was fine. I took a taxi late night as there weren't any buses available. The cab drivers were always very nice and helpful. I felt very safe.
where are you staying?

Dinner really doesn't start until 8 at the earliest. I would concentrate on taking walks in areas like Piazza Navona/Pantheon or Trastevere pre-dinner then back to the hotel after dinner.

The ghetto neighborhood is also very atmospheric in the evening with monuments illuminated and lots of good restaurants. Campo de' Fiori seemed to have a lot of teenagers hanging out in the evenings.

One evening at dusk we watched the lights come on in Piazza San Pietro which was very beautiful.

The Pincio Gardens at the western edge of the Villa Borghese, overlooking the Piazza del Popolo are a good place to watch the sunset over a panoramic view of Rome.

The Romans are nocturnal people. The natives go for dinner not before 9 p.m. and usually around 10 p.m. This means, there are a lot of people in the streets between sunset and well after midnight. Most areas of Rome are illuminated and crowded at night, with bar and restaurant tables on the piazzas.

So, a nightly stroll is a must-do experience in Rome. Popular areas are the Spanish Steps/Trevi fountain area, Via dei Condotti, Piazza Navona, the square in front of the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, Campo dei Fiori, the Ghetto and Via Veneto (Fellini's "La Dolce Vita").

See also the great monuments with nightly illumation.

Wow, I'm staying at Picasso Hotel, Via Venezia, 25, is this in a good spot for the suggestions above. I'll be exhausted by the evening, but didn't really want to spend 6 nights by myself in a room. Would it be safe around here to go walking at night? Thank you so much for your suggestions, things look so different at night than they do in the day.

Via Venezia is in the Termini area, which is by far not as inviting at night as the historic center (Navona, Pantheon) or Trastevere.

If you can do so without penalty, change your hotel. If not, you can enjoy the evening and take a taxi back to your hotel.

I'm looking at other hotels, any options on the Piazza Venezia, specifically their single rooms?
Thanks

Hi Melissa

I stayed at www.teatropace33.com two years ago on a solo trip to Rome. Their single rooms are clean, modern but tiny -- however the location is excellent, right next to Piazza Navona.

At night, I usually wandered through the historical center. I always felt safe, even when I was lost.

I was on my own in rome for a few days last summer -- stayed in Trastevere, however. Previously I have been on my own in the Pantheon area which does indeed stay quite lively until quite late.

I too would be cautious about Termini area; I did not feel as comfortable there and would not hang around in the evening based on my limited experience.

Love walking around the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and nearby streets; wonderful Passagiata all around historic center.

While Termini station gets seedy at night, Via Venezia is not that bad. It is a side street of Via Nazionale where you find many gorgeous palaces (most of them are used for public institutions). However, for nightly strolls a hotel that is more central, is preferable.

You don't want to stay on Piazza Venezia; it's basically a huge traffic circle.

Go to www.venere.com and enter your dates and budget. Choose Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori as areas. Do it with both hotels and B&Bs. Guest ratings are more reliable than star ratings.

We stayed at the Hotel Alius , 243 Via Nazionale a month ago, basically a block away and it was fine- you might want to check there, too. I thought it was far enough away from Termini to be safe and not too far away from the historic center.

You can book your hotel near Termini Station or near Piazza Republica. You can join some walking tour or with the help of map, you can start walking from Piazza Republica to Piazza Barberini, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona (Last three destinations are at a very easy distance from one another and area surrounding these places is full of people, bars, pizzerias, restaurant etc). But if you have to go inside Pantheon, please check its closing time.

Then relax yourself on Spanish Steps which is a very lively area and down the steps, you will find Via Condotti, known as the costliest street in Rome and which is good for window shopping. After crossing Via Condotti, you will find Via del Corso which has some affordable shops.

You should not miss Castle St. Angelo and Vatican.

Lissa -- I'm glad you think so. The link is supposed to be www.hotelteatropace.com

I loved it there and especially enjoyed having my breakfast brought to my room every morning. The location can't be beat. Honestly, I would choose a hotel around Piazza Navona or perhaps the Pantheon if staying alone, especially if this is your first trip to Rome. It's central, lively and like I said, I always felt safe on my own.

Here is my trip report: http://tinyurl.com/2g2tncs

Solo travel is a fantastic experience. Good luck!

hi lissa,

I agree that if you can, you should change your hotel to the piazza navona/pantheon area, not necessarily because of safety [though they are "nicer" areas than those around termini] but also because that are just more central to what you are likely to want to see.

I know this as we've stayed in both, and had a much better time when we were in the more central location. also as a single woman, i would prefer just to be able to wander straight from my hotel to the things I wanted to see, especially at night, rather than to have to negotiate some of the rather undesireable "types" that can be seen round termini station - from those who want to "help" you buy a ticket, to the lady we saw apparently praying to a lamp post.
