Rome Archeobus
 

Are there a few Fodorites out there who have successfully ridden the Archeobus and taken it either round trip, or gotten off and back on another on the hourly route?

It seems like the ideal way to travel the Appian Way, especially with the option to get off and catch the next one (or later). Several of the stops are of interest to us.

The only time we actually were able to find one where it is supposed to be on Piazza Venezia, it was not operating due to a mechanical malfunction.

Last fall we rode the Archeobus, and for us, yes, it was the ideal way to travel to and from the Appian Way. It was the ideal way to spend our "jetlag" day! We also had a terrific Sunday lunch at Archeologia, followed by a nice stroll along Appia Antica. On Sundays it is closed to most traffic. We started at Termini. I think a two day ticket was 18 Euro.

Thanks for the links and the info! Seems like it might be a good idea to buy the tickets a day or so before we plan to go.

Hanabilly, do I understand correctly that on traffic free Sunday's the Archeobus still travels that route?

So sorry, iluvitaly, for the long delay in responding. I was unable to log in for a few days. Yes, the Archeobus travels along Appia Antica on Sunday. In fact, that is what makes Sunday such a nice day to go out there (IMO) There are only buses and a little local traffic (maybe taxis too?) It's possible to stroll leisurely down the street which, I would imagine, is quite busy on other days. The bus also stops at several locations in the historic center, making it easy way to get around (hop on hop off.) We never really paid close attention to the schedule. A bus always seemed to come along within a few minutes of stopping at a stop. I think they run about every half hour.

Also, we bought tickets just before boarding at one of the kiosks across from the termini. We had purchased tickets online before leaving home, but in one of our silliest maneuvers in our travel history, we LOST them on the way to board the bus. DOH! I hope someone found and used them, and they didn't just become some Rome street litter. Blame it on jet -lag. Could have been far worse.
