Rome apt or 2-star hotel near Trastevere

Hey ho Fodorite friends- I am really struggling on this October trip. Just cannot seem to make up my mind.

I'm flying solo this trip and, though I have stayed in apartments in Rome solo before, I'm thinking I may just want to book a hotel.

I would like to be close to a tram stop in Trastevere; I'd also consider anything close to a metro stop, (Spanish Steps, Barberini, Colosseum or Circus Maximus. Ghetto would be fine.)

I've looked at dozens and dozens of hotels on TripAdvisor, and still end up blank at the end of the night.

Anyone stay recently in that area? I'm looking for something under $200/night. (I met some folks last trip to Rome who said they really liked their hotel; it was closer to the river and I swear they said it was named after a nearby church. I was thinking San Francesco a Ripa, but then I was sure they were talking about something on the west side of the street. So I'm just confused.) :(

Help! any/all suggestions appreciated!

Hotel Santa Maria in Trastavere. Not sure of the current price as we were there many years ago. Walking distance to public transportation and away from some of the hustle and bustle of the city. It's an old convent with a lovely courtyard filled with orange trees.

We stayed here on our trip to Rome last year and loved it. It's in the Trastevere and we found getting around easy. There was a tram stop within 5-10mins walk.

The owner is also lovely and very helpful.

Hi Sarge - Yes it's the Galatea Apartment (it's a studio).

>>> KY- Have you stayed at this B&B?<<<

I haven't as it was booked the times I tried to book it. There have been a lot of positive reviews for it on Fodor's over the years, but their search function doesn't easily turn them up (you have to go into advanced and tweak the years, etc.). Here's a couple. I'm pretty sure LucieV stayed there and posted a review or comment, but so far, haven't turned it up (ask her in the lounge). It's a B&B, not a hotel if that matters to you.

This one is a bit buried in the report.

LCBoniti: I have this fantastic shot of the Colosseum with traffic snaking past it and it's one of my favourites - just an amazing structure to see still standing.

Dee: It is worth the wait definitely to get back over and see the amazing Paris and Rome. I enjoyed both places but Italy completely won me over. If you are looking for accommodation then I would highly recommend Arco del lauro in Trastevere, Lorenza was amazing and so helpful during our stay there.****

This person listed their blog on this thread (their trip report is on their blog, not the thread). They did a review on the Arco del Lauro (it's in their archive list on the right).

I stayed at a hostel in a shared room near Vatican City, and I should say it did not affect my trip at all.

The historical and touristic areas of Rome is not very large, you can even walk to them if you do not have any disabilities.

So, I would opt for the cheaper one but it is your call. 200$ a night is way too much!
