Rome apartments or moderate hotel
looking for suggestions for centrally located apartments in Rome for a few days mar/apr, 2011
only two of us, but prefer apartments to hotels, but fab moderate priced hotel suggestions are also welcome.. bob |
Bob you need to give a price range to get meaningful answers.
While you are waiting for those to pour in, here is my (completed!) trip report from a few years ago; we stayed at the Albergo del Senato last time. This may be out of your desired price range but I would try to remain in the general area if possible. OR, if you do not mind staying just a bit further from the core of the historic center, take a look at the Senato's sister hotel closer to Termini station. http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...nuary-2007.cfm Hotel Raffaello: http://www.hotelraffaello.it/ |
price range is uncertain but i should think 100E or less per nite
|
60-80 E would make me the most happy
|
That's a low budget for an apartment in Rome. That price might not get you much more than a studio with a sofa bed. Are you ok with a sofa bed? What location do you want? You might find better rates for March as April will be Easter vacations and high season.
|
I agree. Those prices seem very low. Rome can be quite expensive for accommodations, especially if you want to stay in the historic core.
You may find better prices near the Vatican which, for me, would not be the best location but would certainly be acceptable. Here is an example of a B&B near the Vatican, that might fit your budget (70-90 euro) ; it seems to be well reviewed on TA, although most of the reviews are from reviewers with only this review in their history, so take care: http://www.agv2001.com/ |
Here is a place in Monti for 80 euro per night; I like the area.
However, it is on the third floor (might be 4 levels up) , and has no lift: http://www.sleepinitaly.com/en/show-...id_appartam=35 |
Not less than 100 EU/night, but we liked the set-up of the Domus Julia. An apartment-style annex to the Hotel Julia. Right near the Spanish Steps, and close to the Trevi, Pantheon, etc. We had free breakfast in the adjacent Hotel Julia's nice breakfast room.

I agree your price target seems awfully low. Try the studio apartments listed by realrome.com for good value
|
i know it is low and that is why i asked for insider help, hoping that something fantastic might pop up...
i will try to be clear of easter....i think we would be in rome from about 3/31 to 4/3 or thereabouts.... remember we are from the asia forum and are used to cheap accomodations of 4* and above... of course that equates sometimes to a 3* in europe with its inflated standards... looks like the pope will be having some empty rooms, maybe i could appeal to him?? |
My sister and I stayed in one of these studios a few years ago and enjoyed it. Not luxury at all, but well-located and perfectly serviceable.

thanks

also seeking an hotel at the da vinci airport for one nite????
|
rhkkmk,
We just returned from two weeks in Italy. We stayed at an apartment arranged through SleepInItaly. We loved it. The apartment was not centrally-located, but really you can bus or walk anywhere. The apartment was five minutes walk over the bridge to Castel Sant'Angelo, 10-12 minutes walk to Vatican. We walked to Pantheon and it took us about 20 minutes. We also took the #62 bus to Piazza Venezia and the Forum/Colosseum area. That took about 10 mts. We also took the #116 to Pantheon for dinner one night. Both bus stops were within 3 minutes walk from the apartment. The apartment was very modern and lovely. Fully furnished one bedroom, large by European standards. Fully equipped kitchen. The link to the apartment is here: http://www.sleepinitaly.com/en/show-...d_appartam=165 We paid E755 for 6 nights. We thought it was a bargain. :) |
>>>also seeking an hotel at the da vinci airport for one nite????<<<
There's not much at the airport (Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard), the area isn't that attractive and the hotels can be expensive. Stay in Rome, enjoy your last night and book a limo to the airport for your flight. http://www.romeshuttlelimousine.com/FiumicinoE.htm |
thanks all

Hi Bob
We are looking at a similar time and price for next year also. I have these on my list: http://www.palazzo-olivia.it/ The Berta flat is small but might just fit within budget. There is a mini flat here that you can look at also: http://lacasadiclelia.webs.com/ A Fodorite stayed in the larger flat and enjoyed it, maybe you can do a seach. This is a B&B that isn't too bad price wise: http://www.littlequeen.it/littlequeen_eng/home_eng.htm I can't recommend any of these of course but just thought you might be interested in some of my budget finds so far. Would love to know what you can find. |
maudie....i like the looks of these places.....have you decided where you will stay?
|
I'm bumping this as I'm also looking for an apartment and I don't know what it would be a good area to stay with my kids for 3 nights. Are 3 nights enough for Rome?
|
A friend who went to Rome with his teen-aged daughter stayed at Hotel des Artistes, which is in the neighborhood near the Termini train station. It is a budget hotel and they liked it very much.
|
Hi again Bob
I think Palazzo Olivia seems the best bet for us - we can save money by self catering which we cannot do in a B&B or hotel. We might even push it and stay in one of the 130E apartments as that is our absolute ceiling price. So far for 3 1/2 weeks in Italy I have found places within that limit. Takes many hours of searching though. We are pretty simple travellers and don't require anything fancy so our style certainly doesn't suit everyone. Like you we travel to Asia and are used to cheaper prices so its a bit of a eye opener when we look at some of the prices in Europe. We are off to Phi Phi Island in 3 weeks and got a great price of 100AUD per night at the HI including breakfast. You have helped me in the past on the Asia board and I always enjoy your posts. Good luck with your search, unfortunately we will miss each other in Rome as we arrive on May 1. |
maudie---write to me at [email protected] after your return and tell me about your rome experiences... i would much appreciate that... we don't go until march...
i am now looking at monestaries and nunneries as well as a place to stay....there are many in rome....just google it... |
i've written to little queen...
|
Instead of googling it, use the Rome Tourist Board website. There are 189 convents in Rome that provide places to stay. Some are really convents while others are more hotel style, but owned by convents. Many don't have websites or e-mail so you have to phone for reservations and they might not have someone that speaks English. Most are cash only and require a deposit sent by various means such as Western Union. There are websites that are resellers such as Monastery Stays, but they markup the price (10-15€ per night for a single). Prices range from lows of 10€ to 360€ so don't expect all to be cheap. If staying in a convent, you need to ask about curfew. Some are as early as 9pm while others don't have curfew at all.
This is one of the nicest, right in front of St. Peter's, but it's not cheap. http://www.palazzocesi.it/hotel-cesi-roma/en/ |
Bob - bit confused, we leave for Phi Phi in 3 weeks but not going to Italy until May 2011 so you will be there before us. Would love to write to you though!
We had a good look at monasteries but we aren't religious people and somehow it just doesn't feel right for us. As kybourbon stated above - not all of them seem that much of a bargain. |
Not sure if found an apartment yet, but we stayed here and loved it. Small, but great location and the price fit the apartment.

Thanks iamq but that apartment has a 7 night minimum booking, shame as it looks great.
