Most efficient way to get from Bellagio to Lucerne?
From previous threads, I have determined that I believe I have two choices on how to get from Bellagio to Lucerne, Switzerland.
Option 1 - Take ferry from Bellagio to Como, then walk one mile to Como train station and take Como train to Lucerne with one stop in Arth-go. Total travel time is 8:13 am to 1:20.
Option 2 - Take ferry from Bellagio to Menaggio, then take bus from Menaggio to Lugano, then walk to train station (one mile walk??) and take nonstop train from Lugano to Lucerne. Total travel time is 6:20 am - 11:40 am.
There has got to be a better way to do this, right?

Just a thought, have you tried the route from Varenna to Como via train? You would just take the ferry to Varenna, walk up the hill to the train station. It might take you to the same train station you would need to switch trains for Luzern and save that longer walk. I did this route several years ago and I can't remember if we took the train from Varenna to Como to Luzern or Varenna to Milan to Luzern.

We went Varenna to Milano to Lucerne (Luzern). It was about an hour for the first leg and then about 3.5 hours for the second. We arrived in Milano Centrale and departed from there and had about 25 minutes to find our train. then a train change in Arth-Goldau. Probably travel time of about 5 hours. From what I recall, it went pretty well!
Not sure if this option saves you any time or hassle over your the routes you already found.

HappyTrvlr, the station you walked to is not the one the OP would use to board a train to Lucerne.
JillDavis, pick your poison. You could move to Lugano the afternoon before going to Lucerne to avoid all the transfers in one day. The ferry down to Como gives you views of the beautiful shoreline. The bus from Menaggio to Lugano travels through pretty foothills. I haven't looked, but the Varenna option could have fewer transfers but may be longer overall.
Another route with fewer transfers but a longer journey would be through St. Moritz. The scenery might be worth the time!

I've taken the bus from menaggio to Lugano. It is a very pleasant ride. the ferry from bellagio to menaggio is absolutely no big deal.
If you can, I would do it that way and overnight in Lugano, then go on to Lucerne. Both are beautiful.

There are two train stations in Como city.
One is quite near the boat landing--in fact the train line ends there. This is on a local train line (Ferrovia Nord) that is not part of the Italian national rail system. Trains head south from here toward Milan.
The other, San Giovanni, is a 10-minute walk from the ferry landing. Trains from here head both south to Milan and north to Switzerland.
The train line at Varenna-Esino does not stop at Como city, but as someone mention, a train from here would be the fastest way to return to Milan for a direct train to Lucerne.
Here's one of the ferry schedules:

Look at Fast Services on the schedule that ellenem has given you above..It is fast, a hydrofoil, but not as pleasant as the regular ferries as you are inside, can't see much( like George Clooney's villa which you'll pass!)
I really don't remember how long the walk was but it wasn't far, doable, and we're much older than you.
