Rome Anniversary Dinner Recommendation
My husband and I will be celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary in Rome during the first week of August. We'd like to celebrate the actual day with a special dinner, a place where cuisine and atmosphere intersect to provide a memorable evening. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am sure everyone will define atmosphere a little bit differently. That said, two suggestions:
La Pergola....very nice, traditional service and an incredible view. The dome at St Peter's seems so close you feel like you can touch it. Huge wine list. We dined on the patio. It was not our best meal in Rome but it was a great overall experience. The food was very good but not as good as...
Glass Hostaria...vibrant, modern and incredible dining. The Parmesan ravioli was to die for and my husband still talks about the beef tartare. Good service but less traditional service, less formal than La Pergola.

Do you have a budget? La Pergola (recommended above) is a 3 Michelin star restaurant some way out of central Rome - with a price to match. Here is the menu

Something I think you need to consider in August is whether eating outdoors is fun or wilting due to the potential for heat. And of course, whether or not your pick is open.
What do you like to eat, and what do you consider "special." There are some places that feature fish, others lean toward meat/cheese, still others something "creative" and yet others are devoted to long Roman traditions.
Views in the classic sense are a bit hard to come by in Roman eateries. Sometimes people celebrate by having a cocktail at one of the rooftop or garden terraces, then go to eat elsewhere, someplace that serves the sort of thing they like as a dining experience, view or no view.
One last thought: What makes Rome a memorable dining experience for me is the conviviality of Roman restaurants and the fact that most locals eat in larger groups than two, enjoying each other's company. I've only been to a few or the more "special occasion" restaurants in Rome (and none of "creative" trendy ones), and the meals I remember best in Rome were in places easily affordable to Romans, out to have fun together while eating good food.

Blueeyedcod, we are near the Piazza Della Repubblica. Since this is an anniversary meal, budget is not so much a consideration. Any other time, we would gravitate towards trattoria or smaller restaurants. I guess what we're looking for is delicious and memorable.

Sandralist, thanks for mentioning the heat. This is not the time we would have chose to be in Rome, but we'll be with friends during the earlier part of our trip, and they had time constraints. In terms of cuisine, we eat anything but eggplant, so I'm open to whatever separates Rome from other regions in Italy. We've traveled elsewhere in Italy, so I'd be interesting in a place that defines Roman cooking. I agree with you that outdoors would probably not be the best option. I think what we're looking for is that intersection of delicious and memorable.
