rome and venice in October-suggestions
Hello all. Planning to fly into Venice and stay 5 nights; train to Rome, stay for 6 nights. I have been(many years ago) to both, but husband has not. Wanted to RELAX in addition to touring. Question is- is this too much time in either place? Was wondering if too long in Venice. Are there feasible day trips from Venice? suggestions welcome. many thanks

This sounds like the perfect vacation to me. I like to wander and really get a feel for the places I visit so having such an extended amount of time in these two wonderful cities sounds ideal. I don't think five nights in Vencie is too much, especially if you are planning on spending time touring the outlying islands such as Murano and Burano. We took a day trip to Verona from Venice and it was perfect. You can either rent a car and drive or catch a train, which takes about 1 1/2 hours if I remember correctly. If you do a search you will find many previous posts with suggestions for day trips from Venice as well. Enjoy.

Perfect vacation!
There are so many things to see in Venice, you will never run out of ideas: museums, churches, concerts, tours, artisans, gondola ride. There are also the islands, especially Burano. Perhaps daytrip to Padova, Vicenza, or Verona. Same is true for Rome! What is nice about doing a trip your way is you don't just get a snapshot of the place. You start to feel a real connection. Don't know what time in October you are going, but last year, Venice got a little more flooding a little earlier than usual in October (we were there). You might consider not staying between Rialto and San Marco - San Marco being the lowest area. Experts on this board can make better recommendations than I about the best places to stay during that time of year. Since you are going to Venice first, you might be there earlier and it won't matter. |

I've been to Venice at that time and it was in the 70s. You can check weather sites for the averages.
