Rome and Venice Hotels

Another grand-daughter, another trip. We are going on school vacation April 1 to April 6 and splitting the time between Rome and Venice. With the dollar going south, compared to the E does anyone have suggestions for a well located moderate to cheap nice hotel in either city? I had heard about the Adler in Rome. Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help.
Helen

As always, I recommend the Hotel Panda in Rome. www.hotelpanda.it Loved the location (upscale shopping area, across from Spanish Steps), not noisy at night though; decent, clean room; decent price (double no bath for 68E). We had a bathroom in our room, but also used the shared one down the hall and it was clean too. Staff was also helpful.

I'd recommend Casa Rezzonica in Venice-located not far from the Accademia...

Helen-in order to know how to respond, how do you define "cheap"? And although I suspect that Nikorami is a "shill" for venere.com, venere IS an excellent source for hotel rooms/ B&Bs, with good location maps and reviews-however, not necessarily always the best rates; for that you need to compare venere.com's rates to the rates given on the hotel's actual website. Also try romeby.com and veniceby.com as well.

Helen:

I bet you had no idea where this trhead was headed!

As for Rome, I don't know the Adler. If you'll tell us your nightly hotel budget (double room?) you will get better suggestions.

We stayed with our children at the Hotel Alimandi which is right across from the Vatican Museum. It was very nice and has a lovely rooftop setting for breakfast. Plus the staff was extremely helpful and got us tickets to a Papal Audience. I have a friend staying there now and I think her room is around 100 euros.

Also on a trip this summer to europe with our children, I discovered the website www.gtahotels.com They had great rates and we got wonderful rooms through them. I was nervous at first since you prepay for your room, but had no problem getting a refund when I decided to shorten a stay at one hotel.

Finally this may not qualify as "moderate to cheap", but we used a website luxurylink.com to purchase 4 nights at the Cotswold House Hotel. Our package included breakfast, tea for two one day and a very luxurious dinner for two. Everything was included at the cost of $700. One tip in using luxurylink is to check with the hotel before you bid to see if they have availability on a luxurylink package for the days you want before you buy the package.

In Venice we stayed at the Antico Dodge. Our children loved the setting we we paid about 130 euros per room.

Helen,
Although we have not stayed at the places I will list, they get decent reviews and all gave me reasonable quotes for our upcoming stay in Venice in June. We decided on an apartment, but would probably have booked the Hotel Bernardi otherwise.

These two were a bit more, but under 200 Euros per night:

I have to admit, I'm going through a bit of sticker shock myself on the hotel prices. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone who has sent me info. As far as price range anything under $200 a night sounds good to me - the further under the better, within reason - no shared bathrooms.

In Venice, we stayed at the B&B Casanova ai Tolentini. It is very close to the Roma car-park area and vaporetto stop, and within walking distance of the train station, albeit over a few bridges. The accomodations were new and clean. For breakfast we ate at a cafe just outside the B&B. We paid 120 Euro/night.
