What is your advice for going to rome and sorrento and amalfi coast in october or november? Also, has anyone used sleep in italy - the apartments for rent in rome. How did you like the accomodations and location? Did you also use them for sorrento?

November is getting kind of late in the year for Sorrento. The Amalfi Coast is basically beach resorts (except for Pompeii and the Museum in Naples) and November is way too cold for swimming. At that time some hotels and restaurants will be closed for the season, ferries will run less often - and may not run at all if the water is too rough. If you like a beach resort in cool weather - that's fine - but realize you won;t see it at it's best (May/June).

My fiance and I were in Rome / Sorrento / Capri last November - it was gorgeous. The weather was perfect. We wore T-shirts during the day and a sweater at night. Capri was still bussling with tourists - I can't imagine having to go there in August. It must be packed!! We had no problem getting around with the ferries to/from Capri and Sorrento. Also - you may get off-season rates at the hotels. Pompeii was wonderful as well. (But we did not swim or lay in the sun - we spent more time visiting the sights)

I have traveled to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in various seasons including December. That was a Christmas/New Year's trip and I had good experiences with the weather, just 2 days when it rained, but many that were sunny chilly. This year, I'll be there in October. I think you'll find some places will be closed for the season, but many others, especially in Sorrento will remain open, and your only limitations will be possible ferry delays. I might also mention that during my December trip, I walked the path from Positano to Nocelle and saw flowers blooming.

I haven't yet used sleepinitaly. I tend to research first, then call places and reserve with them directly if at all possible, requesting email confirmations. (This means many middle-of-the-night calls from my end, but it's fun)

Enjoy your time in Italy- Traveling in the off season can be a great advantage in many ways.

DH and I are taking my parents and sister to Rome and Sorrento in late November of 2008. From what I found when researching the trip, it is the rainy season and it will be cool, but the major sites like Pompei, the National Archaeology Museum in Naples, Herculaneum, Paestum, and the museums/churches of Rome will all be open although they close earlier than they do in the summer months.
