Rome and Positano mid April, Hotel recommendations and weather?

We are planning a trip to Italy for mid April
specifically to Rome and then on to Positano.
Can anyone recommend great hotels that are centrally located for around $200 a night. We are thinking about spending 3 days in Rome. Is that enough time? What would the weather be like in April in Positano.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Bryan, The weather will be mild and
balmy in Positano then and the flowers
will be out. I will be there 2 weeks
before you. Stay at either the Poseidon
or Casa Albertina--the former if hiking
up hill is a problem. In Rome, you may
be able to get the Santa Chiara or the
Due Torri for that but they are popular.
April is like Atlanta in this area.

I stayed at the Hotel Margutta 2 years ago. It is located near the Piazza del Popolo, which if you check the map is at the northern edge of the city proper, the point where the 3 streets branch out (hence known as the Trident). Small, quiet, breakfast ... nothing fancy, just a basic middle hotel in Europe. The guide books have a fine selection of places.

Rome is definitely a walking city. No car, never! You won't even need to take the metro much. The first night, without knowing it, we left for a short walk and ended up at the Piazza Navona! The area containing the tourist sites is very small and navigable. Only the Vatican/St. Peter's requires a trip. You might consider an AmEx guided tour for that. Their office is right at the base of the spanish steps.

I've spent time at the Hotel Palatino on the Via Cavour. It was very nice, about 3 blocks from the colosseum and prices appear to start at $96.00. The have a nice web site. And of course, no, that will not be enough time in Rome. You can walk everyplace you'll want to go - except maybe St. Peter's- but a cab should only set you back about $6-7.That's last years prices, and the conversion is much better now.Enjoy-------you're going at a perfect time of year.

I was in both cities in October '99 and highly recommend the Poseidon in Positano. All rooms have lovely verandas overlooking the city and beach down below. We paid 370,000 lire per night. In Rome, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza which is located in the Pantheon area. We walked everywhere from there. We considered staying at the Intercontinental but were glad we didn't - it's located at the top of the Spanish Steps and after a full day of walking, the last thing we wanted to do was climb those stairs! We paid 495,000 lire at the Crowne Plaza - this was a AAA rate.
