HI everyone. Need some input on a Rome and Naples summer trip. We are going in July and need some input on how much to budget ourselves daily for food and museums for a 9 day trip 4 days in Rome 4 days in Naples. with Hotel paid for ahead of time, how much is a realistic daily budget for 2 adults and one 9 year old child for daily food and sightseeing ? Any input or ranges with would be helpful. Thank you in advance :)

Many guidebooks give information about typical costs, so you might consult a few in your local library. And I would strongly encourage you to invest in at least one -- the cost of a guidebook will be nugatory in comparison to the cost of your trip, and you will learn things you don't even know you should be asking!

Both cities are wonderful, and each offers SOOoooo much that I would strongly encourage you to think through your priorities in advance. Again, a good guidebook or two will prove invaluable.

When planning your sightseeing, do keep in mind the attention span and interest level of your 9-year-old. If you are burning to see the Vatican Museums (home of the Sistine Chapel), go one at a time while the other minds your child, because between the size of the museums and the crowds, it will not be a pleasant visit for him/her. In all honesty, your child will probably remember little of the sights, so I would recommend keeping museums and such to a minimum - absolutely no more than one a day, and it would be wise to do less than that.

I would suggest reading up on the sights and deciding which you are interested in, then look up the entrance fees. Some sights are pretty costly (Vatican Museums, but see above), while others are quite reasonable, so which you choose will have a big impact on your sightseeing costs.

Like kja mentioned, add up the costs of the museums you want to see to get a good idea on those costs.

Are you considering renting an apartment? This would allow you to run to the grocery store and stock up on reasonably priced food items and drinks.

But even if you are in a hotel, you can pop into a cafe each morning for inexpensive coffee and pastries (never sit at a table!) and then visit a grocery store for fruit and yogurt, etc.

It is possible to eat cheaply, but be aware that anytime you sit down for a meal, the costs can easily add up to 50E or more. (Usually much more for us!) We often limit ourselves to one sit-down meal in the evening and have breakfast and lunch standing up (cafe, pizzeria, etc.) or at the apartment.

bibliotecaria71 is very kind to give me credit for the idea of adding up museum costs (and has given some great tips!), but I actually meant something a bit different: Many guidebooks have information about the typical costs of various things, or at least the range of costs one might expect for them, including everything from a cup of coffee through a quick lunch through various types of dinners.

And FWIW, I think artsnletters has given some great advice. :-)
