Rome & Amalfi Coast
 

Hi all-

I'm going to be visiting Rome in September and I'm thinking of taking a day trip and driving the Amalfi Coast. I've talked a little bit about this with some people I met who are from the area, and they convinced me it's absolutely do-able - but I'm looking for any tips, advice, stories of other people's experiences if you've done this.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

This would b a very long trip for one day. It will take several hours to get there - and once on the coast road speeds are very slow due to heavy traffic, tour buses etc. (If 2 buses or a bus and a large truck meet often one will have to back up to a wider spot in the road so they can pass.)

If you want time to stop at any of the villages nd look around - after all that sitting in traffic - you will be getting back to Rome very late at night.

Are you sure that you wish to spend all day driving down to the AC so that you can sit in traffic on the Coast Road?

You have 2 issues here---seeing the AC as a day trip from Rome, and driving the AC. Both are bad ideas. Seeing Naples and Pompeii is doable from Rome but the real coast is too far and too slow.

I'm sure it's "do-able," but does it have to be a single-day trip? Without stops or delays, this is more than 7 hours of driving, perhaps more in September and definitely more on a weekend. Even spending one night in the area would make it much more enjoyable, IMO.

Don't mean to be discouraging -since we have driven the road several times in May and it was a lot of fun - stopping at several of the small towns. But we did this from Sorrento and it took the whole day. Driving to and fro Rome would add 5 or 6 hours driving on top of this.

And do realize that your speed may range from 30 mph down to about 5 - when stuck behind a larger vehicle.
