Rome Airport Train Station - Staffed or Un-Staffed?
 

I often advise folks landing in Rome and wanting to buy train tickets to Florence, etc that they can most easily do this at Rome's Airport rather than the hectic Rome Termini Station where you could wait hours in line.

Q- Is the Rome Airport (Fiumincino sp?) staffed - meaning someone is behind the ticket window to attend to your needs.

Or are there only the Trenitalia automatic ticketing machines.

And these machines, which seem to me to be very easy to use when i played around with them - will they take American Credit Cards or not? If so these machines are the way to go - so so idiot-proof that even i could use them.

Yes, there is a ticket window with real live people directly in front of the trains that leave Fiumicino for Termini.

There is also a travel agency across the hall from the
Trenitalia ticket office windows which is authorized to sell train tickets. Using this travel agency is a useful option if the lines at the ticket office windows is very long, and if the passenger is uncomfortable using the self-service machines.

Also bear in mind that, once at Roma Termini Station or Roma Tiburtina Station, there are automated ticket machines with multilingual touch screens. Some machines accept both credit cards and cash; others only cash; still others only cards. Termini Station (and perhaps Tiburtina) should also still have the "sportello veloce" ticket windows dedicated to ticket sales for fast trains departing within 15 minutes (so as to avoid standing in the "regular" line for tickets). The sportello veloce is useful if you're not comfortable using the machines.

Remember that, effective July 2009, ALL long-distance trains in Italy have mandatory reserved seats, which come automatic with the ticket sale. These are ALL Trenitalia trains with the exception of the "regionale" ("R") commuter trains, which are ONLY unreserved. This means that you'll always have a guaranteed seat on these long-distance trains (now including also the IC and EXP trains).
