rome airport to venice by train
 

I am flying to Rome in March with 3 other women and want to leave from the airport to go to Venice by train the same morning we arrive. Is there a train station near the airport? We will stay 3 nights in Venice and then return to Rome from the next 7. This is our first trip to Italy and any help you can give would be appreciated.

mishateful, the only way to go to Venice is from Rome Termini Train Station.

Yes, there is a train station across the street from the airport (a pedestrian overpass connects it to the airport). The train will take you to Rome termini where you can change trains to Venice. You can buy your tickets to Venice at the airport station.

Have you thought about flying? Volare flies out of Fiumicino and they are running a great deal now. March tickets may be only 10 euros. Check out www.volareweb.com.

I agree about at least looking into the flight option as it would save you quite a bit of time.
You might also consider doing Rome first, as IMO it will be a VERY long day to arrive from the US on an overnight flight and then have to get to Venice, esp if you go by train and have to change in Rome. The train from Rome main terminal to Venice takes 5 hours so all told with getting from the airport and making your connection you will have about a 7-hour journey ahead of you in the same clothes you put on the day before. . . (This is another reason to maybe fly between the two, as the flight takes one hour.)

If you decide to go by train, as indicated above, you can take a train from Rome airport to Rome main train station and then change for your train to Venice. The train from Rome airport to Rome main train station takes about 30 minutes.

I am not a big fan of the trenitalia website, as I think it is hard to use. Try the Swiss Rail site at rail.ch, you can get timetables for trains in other countries just be entering the start and end points. You cannot get fares.

The website for Rome airport is adr.it (Click on English in the upper right corner.) They have information on trains to Rome main terminal. Another useful site is the world airport guide, the site for Fiumicino airport is worldairportguide.com/Airports/fco/fco.asp (You can also access the adr.it website from this page.)

You can purchase your train tickets Rome/Venice and Venice/Rome at the FCO airport train station when you buy your ticket to Roma TE.

Thanks for all the info. I think it would be best to take the train because the flights I found are all late in the afternoon and we would have no place to hang out with luggage until that time. I know we will be dead tired so the train seems the best bet right now. Do you think there is any chance of not getting a eurostar ticket if we wait until the day of the trip to purchase? It will be on a Sat. March 13th.

You shouldn't have any problem getting on a Eurostar. They run frequently from Termini to Venice. Make sure your ticket is for Venice Santa Lucia, not Mestre. The departure times are: 8:55, 9:30, 10:55, 11:30, 12:55, etc. The 9:30 and 11:30 trains require one change in Bologna.
