Rome accommodation
 

We are four senior Aussies who have two days to spend in Rome before flying home July 2006. We need some accommodation. Can anyone suggest a clean, safe and reasonably priced hotel or B & B with private facilities in which we could stay? Our knowledge of Italian is nonexistent. Does anyone know anything about Hotel Dina?

Take a look at www.venere.com. They divide the city into areas on a map. With only 2 days, you should pick something in the center.

Rezidence San Pantaleo is a small hotel in the heart of the best area of Rome. The rooms range form spacious to tiny, and prices run about 100 Euros. We found the rooms to be clean and quiet, but the person manages the hotel is not very fluent in English.

Although it's hard to know what you consider to be a "reasonable" price (what's reasonable to one person is extravagent to another), I'd suggest the Nicolas Inn, a B&B on Via Cavour. It's a block or so from the Colosseum, it is clean and safe. The owners speak English extremely well (the wife is American), although as a B&B the owners are not on the premises 24 hours per day. They will also provide help in offering suggestions on touring Rome. The cost for us in late September was around $170 Euros/night for a double.

I don't know anything about the Hotel Dina.

The Hotel San Carlo, reasonably priced and very centrally located. All members of the staff are fluent in English. You can get two doubles, four singles or a quad if you like. Here's their website, and fax is the most efficient way of contacting them.

Another vote for the Nicolas Inn. The owners speak English (Melissa is American, Francois is Italian French Lebanese) and they are very helpful.

It is in an old building on a busy street close to the Forum, but once inside, it is spotlessly clean and amazingly quiet, thanks to great sound-proof windows. The decor is contemporary and very soothing. Breakfast is brought on a tray to your rooms and was one of the best we had on this past trip -- the usual continental, but the juice, breads, yogurts and fruit were all delicious.

You say you are seniors. Are stairs a problem for you? When we were there last May, we saw a small elevator but Francois took us up the stairs the first evening and we took the stairs from then on. Don't know if the elevator is available for guests or not...

As mentioned in an above post, the owners don't stay there at night, but are available by the B&B phone 24 hours a day. I felt completely safe there. You do have to unlock 3 doors to get in: one HUGE old wooden door on the street to get into the courtyard, a door at the top of the stairs to get into the B&B itself, and then your room door.
