First time in Rome, Have 2 night reservations at Modigliani & Albergo Santa Chiaria, Which is better central location. or other criteria to validate 124 Euro difference.

The two locations are really incomparable. S. Chiara is about as central as you can get to the historic sites. You're the only one who can decide if it is worth the higher rate.

I, personally, would stay at the Modigliani because it is near the Villa Borghese.

Modigliani gets a ++ from one of Fodor's Gods--St. Cirq.

Both are definitely great location wise, though I and my guests have never had experience with either of these 2 particularly. I did check what Tripadvisor has to say and find that Santa Chiara's got far less negative reviews, but then again it has less reviews in general. Proportionally it looks about equal. Location wise I guess it boils down to proximity to the metro and how important that is, especially in comparison to price. Both are in great locations to walk everywhere, but Modigliani is better connected, and to not deal with Roman traffic when you don't want to walk, underground is almost the only way! However I do prefer the other area, simply because it's closer to restaurants/nightlife/etc than the Via Veneto/Spanish Steps area would be. Either spot is good though, so it depends what truly strikes you as good lodging

Doberminia, I am still confused decision wise. Is the Pantheon area less crowded and stressful then Spanish Steps /Trevi area, we of course will not be lingering but walking as much as we can. As we will be starting our day around 10AM & have only 1 more full day to cover all sights, churches for art, we do want to spend a little time in the Piazza Navona area as well. Difference of $ not so important as is Nicer area.

Pantheon and Spanish Steps areas are equally crowded. But Spanish Steps is a high-end shopping area, while Pantheon area is more about charming narrow winding streets. Personally, I've never seen the draw of the Spanish Steps.

However, the Modigliani is at the top of the Spanish Steps and a few blocks away (the Via Veneto side). The shopping area I mentioned is at the bottom of the Spanish Steps (the Via dei Condotti side).

I'd prefer to be near the Pantheon if I could afford it.

I disagree that this area is all about high-end shopping. The area around the Borghese Gardens is very beautiful. There is a reason all the grand hotels--Hassler, Russie, Eden, Aldrovandi Palace, St. Regis Grand--are near the Borghese Gardens.

Also, if you stay at the Mod., you can walk over to Piazza Barberini to take the Metro to Cipro or Ottaviano to see the Vatican or you can take it to Colosseo (line B) to see the Colosseum or Forum.

As I said in my post, the area with the high-end shopping is at the BOTTOM of the Spanish Steps, not next to the Modigliani which is at the top.

The actual area where the Modigliani is located is probably LESS crowded than the Pantheon area, with straight streets of the stately hotels Thin describes.

Personally, I prefer the area near the Borghese. The gardens are lovely and if you are a walker or a runner, it is a great place to be.

We used to enjoy the area near the Pantheon but it has become a real mob scene.

Albergo Santa Chiara, if I had those 2 only to choose from. The Pantheon area is just brilliant for its proximity to all the major sites.

Albergo del Senato is also ideally located and gets lots of great reviews.
