It’s my boyfriends 21st this year. I wanted to surprise him with a trip to Rome. Never been before can anyone recommend a hotel close to the centre? What’s the prices like when there

"When" is that? Prices differ depending on the market condition. Easiest way to find is to scan the price/availability using booking sites. For example, wwww.booking.com has a map you can hover your cursor all over the city to get a quick grasp of the market condition during your target dates. This does not mean you need to book through them. It always pays to compare to what the hotel offers without intermediaries.

It seems you are looking for accommodation as if there were a list of fixed places to stay. That kind of approach might have made sense 40 years ago, but for someone in the 20s, why are are using an archaic approach in use decades before the internet? Now, you can find out practically anything from your home right now.

A "center" to someone else can be "out of the way" for you depending on your objectives and constraints. It would be more productive if you articulate what is that you are looking for in a hotel beyond generic "center", their availability not only in terms of any room, but the type of room offered, booking conditions, your constraints, etc.

Without identifying what you are looking for and your constraints, your head would spin because you have no objective criteria to make a decision.

I’m thinking a long weekend at the end of September. I’d like to stay somewhere that is near to the famous tourist attractions. Is there any recommended nice hotels near the city centre.

You obviously have access to the internet. Go to Booking.com and start searching, filtering by price, location, amenities, etc. It wouldn't hurt to look at a tourist map of Rome as well. Famous tourist attractions are everywhere. And yes, there are hundreds of hotels in every price range in what many people would call the center of the city, but city center might mean different things to different people.

Name a figure that you are willing to spend.

And make sure both you and your boyfriend have passports valid until at least 6 months after the end of your trip.

Th main tourist attractions are spread all over Rome - the Colloseum and Forum are about an hours walk to the Vatican, or more. The Trevi fountain is about 30 minutes from the Pantheon.

Why not read up a bit about Rome, get a feel for the thi vs that you'd like to see and where you'd like to stay and go from there?

The area round Termini, the train station, can be cheap but not the nicest area. I love staying by the huge park Villa Borghese because its quieter and greener but if you are 21 and want to be in the middle of things, Monti might suit you better.

Do a bit of research and then go e back to this forum with more specific questions and people should be able to help you more.

I stayed at Hotel Palatino in Rome (Via Cavour). ... but the week I am going (in August) this year is already booked, so i am also in the market for a Hotel and will follow this thread.

If you’re on a budget,you can “do” Rome reasonably. Pizza and street food is inexpensive and abundant, and wine is less expensive than soda. I would go online and look at some restaurant menus to get an idea for cost.

So much of the fun of Rome is wandering, and many churches are full of art and free (0r close to it). Rome can be as pricey or cheap as you want it to be, with a little planning.
