Rome #116 Bus Still Running?
 

We are hoping to take the 116 to the Borghese Gallery and I've read conflicting reports about whether it is still in operation or not. Does anyone have any current information about this route?

I've checked the official Rome bus routes and didn't see it listed.

No, it doesn't run any more.

You can use Google Maps to find how to get to the Borghese Gallery by bus from wherever you're starting. They even tell you how to get to the bus stop. Enter your starting address and destination, then click the bus icon. Indicate a day of the week (in the upcoming week) and time of day equivalent to when you'll be traveling. Check again close to your travel date, because they take into account temporary conditions.

It was not running last fall either. We used a substitute.

#83 bus sort of connects the Borghese to Corso in both directions.

#19 tram is better if you are coming from the Vaticans.

Tram 19 is a very slow and roundabout journey from the Vatican, although it gives you a good look at Rome street scenes, and passes the Colosseum.

I find Google Maps to be pretty reliable, and it takes into account traffic and other temporary conditions. That's why it's important to indicate an appropriate weekday and time of day. However, the date must be in the near future, because it can't predict longer term conditions.

If you indicate that you're leaving right now, it will consider which buses are running late.

I also like that it gives you turn-by-turn walking directions to the bus stop. I have lots of times found what bus I should take, but had difficulty finding the bus stop.


The ATAC has a similar app, called Muoversi a Roma (available also in English). It has more information about bus stops, but it's very finicky about having addresses rather than the name of a monument, and it doesn't have very good directions to the bus stop.

Sadly, they did away with the 116 and 117.

What is your starting point?

We'll be staying at the Albergo Cesari.

Pitty. The #116 bus stop to the Borghese was next to the Albergo Cesari.
