Can anyone tell me about how long it takes to get to the Vatican on the Metro (we'll be going from the Repubblica stop, which is one stop past Termini Station). We have reservations for the Scavi tour and I want to make sure we're on time.

You can go to the Web site for buses and Metro in Rome:

You can plug in "Repubblica" as point of departure and scroll down to`"St. Peters" as point of interest.

the time to get to the vatican from the metro is less than 10 min.the time to walk from the metro stop to st peters is longer.if it is a busy hour you might half to wait for a second metro (+5min).its a relatively short trip but it wouldnt hurt to go 15min earlier, there are lots of neat things to see at the vatican and its periphery.

Does the Scavi tour begin in front of St Peter's? If yes, the Metro station is a 10-15 minute walk away. Since there is more than one of you, I think I'd take a cab. The Metro is more convenient for the Vatican Museum entrance.

Thanks. We're actually going twice, once for a Vatican museum tour, and once for Scavi tour. We'll take the Metro for the museum, and the cab for the other.

Personally, I would not spend my money on a cab to get to the Vatican (either Museum or Basilica).

Using a cab, you never know what kind of traffic you may hit, and the meter is running all the time. Also, you can never be certain as to the honesty of your cab driver.

Metro tickets are cheap. Unless you have a disability and have trouble walking, I would go with the public transport.

From the Repubblica metro stop, it is no more than 10 minutes (tops) to the Ottaviano stop. Once you get off the metro, you walk the corridor and then steps up to the street, and it then is a pleasant 10 minute walk to the Basislica. There are many shops, restaurants and a street market (that is open everyday) en route.

Follow the instructions sent to you with your Scavi Tour e-mail confirmation. (Tells you where to check bags---if you have any, and where to enter to get to the Scavi Tour desk, which is just beyond the Swiss Guard stop on the left side of the Basilica.)

If you go into the tour office more than 15 minutes before your tour, they will tell you to leave and come back later. (They don't want people wandering around in this "restricted area".)

From Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza San Pietro is about a one hour beautiful stroll. Unless the weather is really bad I would walk it.

Thanks again for your help. It does look like a nice walk, but we have to be there VERY early for our tours, so it might not work out. I'll certainly keep that in mind. (I'm more of an early riser than my DW, and I'm already getting her up pretty early, so I'm not going to push my luck!)
