Rome - Day trips away

Need help planning day trips outside of Rome (no car). Can Rome to Vesuvias be done in a day?
Thanks

Yes, but it seems like a bad idea to me. Go to Campania and/or the Sorrento peninsula/Amalfi for 24, 48 hours or more, even if it means cutting time from Rome (but no fewer than 72 hours in Rome. ideally). Make sure you include Pompeii.

Better advice might come from more info on your overall itinerary.

Best wishes,

Rex

Hi g,

>Can Rome to Vesuvias be done in a day?

A long day. Figure about 6 hrs to get to/from Vesuvius.

See www.trenitalia.com for schedules Rome to Naples.

My favorites that can easily be done with public transportation:

Orvieto
Ostia Antica
Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa.

Think Patrick has it right - those three day trips are my favorite and easily done by public transport. I'd put Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa above Ostia Antica and Orvieto because of the greater diversity but all three, including Orvieto, a classic hilltown, are fabulous.
