Romatic Road Timing

If we were to drive the Romantic Road from Rothenburg to Fussen, without stopping (and we do plan to stop along the way I just need to resolve some timing issues),about how long would that take?? The mileage does not seem too daunting, but I have no idea what the roads are like. By the way, we'll be travelling just before Christmas. Thanks

About 3 1/2 to 4 hours. The roads are good - you may get congestion around Augsburg.

Hi M,

See www.mappy.com and www.viamichelin.com

Outside of towns, we went along at about 45-60 mph, except when we got stuck behind trucks, then probably about 35-40 until we were able to pass.

seafox Nov 19th, 2007 09:57 AM

I would assume a little over 4 hours too be safe...

thanks ira for the map info. i had already looked on viamichelin before posting, but i could not get it to take me on the romantic road even when i tried scenic rt instrutions. i will try the mappy site. thanks all who have replied... i really wanted opinions from people who had driven the route.

Hi M,

We drove from F to R, but we stopped at Linderhof, Oberammergau and Wies while taking the back roads to Mindelheim for the night.

Mappy allows more waypoints than VM.

PS, even the back roads were in good repair.

Can't tell you what might happen if there is snow.

I just spent five days traveling the RR. There is no point in just driving it. It's a two lane country road with truck and farm traffic. If you have a few days, Nördlingen is nice, although if you just saw Rothenburg, it's redundant. Feuchtwangen, Donauwörth, and Landsburg are pleasant, although not particularly distinctive. Wieskirche is a waste. So, unless you have a few days with nothing better to do, take the train or the autobahn around it.

Wieskirche a waste??

Perhaps the exterior is not to exciting, but the interior is surely impressive.

I disagree that Wieskirche is a waste. The interior is amazing. We are just back from this area and the Romantic Road was busy with lots of congestion around Augsburg. Dinklebuhl is worth a stop--it is a cute town with easy parking and restroom at the end of the car park. We were slightly disappointed in Rothenburg but it is worth one night. Walking the wall, the Night Watchman Tour, and the little pub Holl were the highlights for us.

Hi,
I also agree that the Wieskirche is NOT a waste. Although the exterior is subdued, the interior is extraordinary! We were in Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl last month. While the town of Rothenburg was very nice, we were also a bit dissaponited as it's way too touristy for me. Actually, the Nightwatchmans tour was the highlight. Dinkelsbuhl was worth a stop. As stated above, the car park with the public WC, with the walkway outside the wall along the stream, makes it very convenient. It is a very cute town.

I am allergic to church, so the Weiskirche was not very exciting to me. I spent my time wandering around outside. The setting is very pretty though and there were some friendly goats there that visited with me while I was waiting. When we got home, I saw the pictures my husband took inside and they were truely beautiful.

Glad you mentioned the Nightwatchman's Tour.....we are planning to do that...do you just show up at the appointed place/time. I could not find info about reservations.

seafox Nov 19th, 2007 04:16 PM

Just a thought, I believe Etal is along the route - stop off and by the blueberry schnapps - the best of any kind in the world - thanks to the monks!!

Larryincolorado Nov 19th, 2007 04:42 PM

Ettal Monastery is not exactly "on" the Romantic Road, but it is nearby, just outside of Oberammergau. I could have stopped there on my trip but all I could find that was there to see was yet another boring, overly ornate, Bavarian church, so I passed in favor of a nap.

Now, had I known about the blueberry schnapps....

Hi,
For the Nightwatchmans tour in Rothenburg... no reservations, just show up at the market square in front of town hall at 8pm. We thought the tour was informative, humorous and a great way to spend an hour. We really enjoyed it.
