romantic train journeys featured in Sunday Times
 

Some of you may find these train routes, described as romantic, of interest (Sunday Times, September 24th, 2016). Has anyone done any and would you recommend them?

Paris to Dijon;
Milan to Rome;
Berlin to Warsaw;
Barcelona to Montpelier;
Ljubljana to Zagreb;
Innsbruck to Venice;
Copenhagen to Stockholm;
Vienna to Budapest;
Madrid to Seville;
Leipzig to Erfurt and Nuremberg.

Innsbruck to Venice is lovely.

Vienna to Budapest is short and not that exciting.

All I remember about Milan to Rome is that it was too hot.

I did Ljuljana to Zagreb back in 2004, don't remember it as particularly special.

Does Copenhagen to Gothenburg count? That includes a ferry ride.

Sorry, was going to say Innsbruck to Rovereto is scenic; after that the to Verona and on to Venice part is, IMO. forgettable but a lot of these journey things are not necessarily consistently beautiful.

Copenhagen to Stockholm was highlighted by the bridge crossing between Denmark and Sweden; after that lots of fir trees.

Settle to Carlisle, celebrated in the UK doesn't feature. This may or may not be deserved as a romantic rail journey. I would have thought its connection with the film 'Brief Encounter' alone makes a case for it being classed as romantic. That said, I am naiive by virtue of not having done any of the rail trips listed. Also, isnt there a rail journey between Mallaig and wherever that is supposdedly dramatic (is this the same as romantic?).

Hard to say what the NYT's criteria for "romantic" are, but I would definitely not call Paris to Dijon, Barcelona to Montpellier, or Milan to Rome romantic in the least. Maybe they are suggesting routes I wouldn't normally take.

It looks to me like it may be a list compiled based on the cities at either end, with no knowledge of what's actually in between. I've taken several of the routes and they weren't anything to write home about. Slow news day.

Most of these itineraries are really boring, may be except
Ljubljana - Zagreb
Innsbruck - Rovereto or Domegliara
The Leipzig - Nuremberg itinerary has nothing to do with Erfurt

Madrid - Seville romantic - it's IMO one of the most boring around - this list defies reality.

None of these romantic trains would make my top 25 of such trains and I've ridden just about every romantic or scenic train in Europe.
