Romantic Road - How long would you say it takes to drive it?

I am thinking about traveling the Romantic Road in Germany from top to bottom. I am trying to figure out how much time I will need to stop and enjoy each town. Can anyone help me with what towns are worth seeing, what ones are not worth seeing and an estimate of the time to travel top from bottom. Also, is it wise to drive or take a bus/train?

Best and easiest way to see this area is by renting a car. The German roads and drivers are better than the US.

The Romantic Road can be driven in one day very easily without stopping. You will want to see Wuerzburg at the top, spend the evening in Rothenburg and one day, visit Dinklesbuhl for a short walk and then head on down to Garmisch.

Some people my have a few more favorite stops, but we have done this area many times and find that the rest of the towns are small and nice, but not particularly scenic. Slip over to Augsburg if you want to see that also.

Another nice area is the drive from Andechs (home of fantastic beer) and over to Garmisch or even Berchtesgaden.

Hard to respond without knowing your likes/dislikes. Your thoughts on: Castles? Cathedrals? City? Country? Night life? Scenery?

Now we spent 6 hours just in Wurzburg between the Residenz, Kappela, and Marienplaz, but that's just us.

Actually, some German roads are better than some American roads, and some American roads are better than some German roads. It just depends on where you are driving.

Hi, liesel. It's a dandy idea, but I don't think you'll find yourself wanting to stop in every little town. Driving is probably the most convenient, too. If you are considering more than one day (and I hope you are), try to spend the night in Rothenburg so you can experience it late in the evening and early in the morning. Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen are both nice, but thinking back -- I'd probably spend more time in Rothenburg. The only little secret place I can recommend is Harburg (Schwaben) with its stone bridge and a fortress on the hilltop. J.

There's a beautiful cathedral at Neresheim, not far from Ro'burg'.

A decent German map will have icons of castles and cathedrals (as well as other things of interest), of which you will spot many in the Romantic Rd area.

STill in the dark about your objectives. If your objective is to do it in the least possible time, why not go at 2:00 AM so you won't be distracted by scenery? If your objective is to savor it, you could spend a week.
