Romantic Road - Town Selection
Hi,
My husband and I are planning a trip to Germany in early October. We only have a few days to explore along the Romantic Road so I'm just wondering which towns you think are worth stopping at.
Here's a list from North to South that I found in a book on the RR:
Wurzburg
Tauberbischofsheim
Lauda-Konigshofen
Bad Mergentheim
Weikersheim
Rottingen
Creglingen
Rothenburg
Schillingsfurst
Feuchtwangen
Dinkelsbuhl
Wallerstein
Nordlingen
Harburg
Donauworth
Augsburg
Friedberg
Landsberg
Hohenfurch
Schongau
Peiting
Rottenbuch
Wildsteig
Wieskirche
Steingaden
Schwangau
Fussen
Or maybe there are some others that are not on list that would be worthwhile to stop at?

Pliant, the Romantic Road isn't that long so you can see all the places you mention if you have a few days. Drive through them all and stop wherever you want. Stop in Rothenburg for sure, even though it is probably the most touristy.
Norlingen is the town I remember best. It was built in a meteor crater and there is a wall literally circling the town. If you overnight there, you can stroll along the top of the wall after dinner. We stayed at an inn there called "Zum Fuchs".

Pliant, for our upcoming trip in July/August we are visiting Rothenburg, Nordlingen, Donauworth, Schwangau and Fuessen.
After reading many posts these 4 seem to get good raves. Wurzburg and Augsburg get mentioned a bit as well.
Have fun!

Wuerzburg, Weikersheim (Schloss/little palace), Creglingen (Tilman Riemenschneider Altar in Herrgottskirche), Rothenburg (town itself), Dinkelsbuehl (town itself) , Landsberg/Lech (town center), Fuessen.
You will be travelling late enough so that you won't need reservations and can stop overnight "as the spirit moves you".

The "romantic road" does not run through all these towns and villages. You have to get off the main road to go into these towns. Some are actually cities - while others are just a stop - a church such as Wieskirche. We spent a night in Wurzburg which is a city - very worthwhile - the Residenz in the center of town is the most magnificent palace you can imagine. We also spent a night in Rothenburg which is the most famous of the towns. It is very beautiful with plenty of shopping as well. We had lunch in Landsberg and toured the most beautiful little church in the town center. Spent another night in Fussen and toured Neuschwanstein which is not far from Fussen.

Two years ago after flying all night, got to Frankfurt at 7AM, picked up the rental car and drove to Rothenburg.
Maybe it was because we were tired or the rain but I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. It didn't seem real. The map were given reminded me of one you would get at Disney World so it put me in the mood of 'this is make believe'
This is rather silly since I have a picture of my father during WWII standing at the entrance and it does look the same!
Therefore, don't go by my opinion of that town!
The next day we started down the Romantic Road which was beautiful. We stopped in Dinkelsbuhl for lunch and loved the town. It is a walled city, not as complete as Rothenburg.
We ended up at a little cafe in the center, when we saw the ice cream treats available we forgot about the sandwiches!! I took a picture before we dug in and that is the one photo everyone comments "wow, that looks awesome"
Go figure. I thought the pictures of the Alps were impressive.
We really enjoyed sitting there relaxing and considering doing our first night there this year on the way to Prague.
The Romantic Road has beautiful views of towns, farm land and the Alps.
When the Alps first came into view it took my breath away.

The "big three" so to speak are Rothenburg, Nordlingen, and Dinklesbuhl - all 3 walled cities. Speaking from my own experience, Wurzburg, Bad Mergentheim, and Landsberg are all interesting to stroll through. I especially remember Bad Mergentheim because it seemed very untouristy, if that's a word. I would recommend a stop there. Anyway, the whole road is pretty. It seemed like every little village was lifted from a picture book, so you sort of have to pick and choose. Fussen is a good town to stay in if you want to visit Neuschwanstein.
