romantic place to propose

Hi!
I live in southeast asia. My girlfriend will be in London the weekend of the 5th/6th of July (really short notice!). I plan to fly only for one (1!) day to London to propose marriage. I have been to London only once.
Any suggestions where in London (or within driving range of London)? How about Leeds Castle? White Cliffs of Dover?
Thanks much in advance!

I probably would not go as far as Leeds or Dover since you will be totally wiped out after that long flight and will be back on a plane before you have a chance to recover.

So staying in London here are some thoughts (not knowing your likes/dislikes):

If the weather is nice put together a simple picnic - maybe of prepared food from Harrods or some other shop and head up to Hamstead Heath. It is really lovely and you have a view over all of London.

Lunch or Dinner at the Ivy

Lunch on the terrace at the OXO Tower with a fabulous view of the river and across to the Dome of St Peters. Order a Kiss by the River cocktail.

Dinner in the River Room at the Savoy

Rent a boat on the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

In the top floor cocktail lounge of the London Hilton. Comfy chairs and floor to ceiling windows with views over the whole city.

In the Rose Garden in Regents Park

I should be able to think of more but this is a good start.

have a wonderful time!!

corny--but memorable spots---how about on the BAirways ferris wheel? in front of the Parthenon at the British museum? in front of buckingham palace? on a boat on the thames? after a wonderful night of theater? daytime in cambridge or on a trip to the cotswolds?

I'd go for what your girlfriend likes - her special interests. Me, I like peace (without busybodies in earshot) and gardens - so Kew Gardens would be good for me and they are not too far from Heathrow. But you are not proposing to me!

Thanks for your help. Actually, the cruise on the Thames is something that she might like. Or maybe a drive to Windsor castle (unfortunately Leeds castle is closed).
If we have dinner near the tower, does the area provide a nice romantic walk?
Thanks again.

If you're thinking of Windsor and a nice walk, then I would recommend the Long Walk. It is (as its name suggests) a very picturesque, tree lined walkway in front of the Castle. There are great views of the Castle from the first hill.

Best wishes!
