Romantic place to get married in Scotland
 

I have a friend who wants to get married in Scotland in the early spring. They will then continue their honeymoon to London and Paris. Does anyone have a really great place I can suggest to her. I have never been to Scotland.

At the risk of getting ridicule from people who rightfully know more on this subject. I recall someone telling me years ago that people went to a town called Gretna Green in Scotland to get married, and that the town was known for that.

Gretna Green is not romatic at all. It was just the town that English people ran off to elope, because it is just over the border. <BR> <BR>What about Inverlochy Castle at Ft. William in the Western Highlands? It's a REalis & Chateaux hotel, very posh, and gorgeous! <BR> <BR>Of course, the location is awfully out of the way for someone who wants to honeymoon in London & Paris. Why not have the wedding in a fabulous hotel in the Cotswolds? Very romantic. and close enough to London to make travel pretty easy.

My Mum took me on a day trip to Gretna Green when I was a kid. It p****d down with rain all day & was one of the bleakest trips I remember ( yes, a day trip to Scotland ). I mostly remember hours sitting on a coach, p*****g rain followed by more hours sitting on a coach......

Gretna Green is the Las Vegas of Britian, but quite a bit more quaint. <BR> <BR>I'd recommend someplace in the Highlands, but agree, a long way from Paris and London. <BR> <BR>A romantic inn we like to stay at in the Highlands near Loch Ness has a wedding package - the Inn is Glenmmoriston Arms. Do a search to find them on the internet.

Marty, <BR> <BR>I'm from the US, and I am getting married in Scotland in August 2001. After doing some research, my fiance and I chose Dalhousie Castle, which is a few miles outside of Edinburgh. The castle is several hundred years old, and has been converted into a luxury hotel (although most of our guests will stay in central Edinburgh because there's more to do). <BR> <BR>The castle has a chapel, and also several banquet rooms for receptions (or if it will be just the two of them, they can eat in the castle's small dungeon restaurant). The castle has a wedding coordinator who can recommend various vendors for flowers, cake, etc. <BR> <BR>Your friend can email me directly if he/she has more specific questions.

Sandy--when someone says "My friends want to get married in Scotland", instead of providing advice, why do you tell them that they should get married somewhere else? I hope you're not this controlling in your real life.

Marty <BR> <BR>It's difficult to recommend a single place, because one person's idea of romantic is another's turnoff. <BR> <BR>Gretna exists qua Gretna, because of the different legal systems in Scotland and England. In Scotland we came of full age when we were 16; English girls had to wait till they were 21; so young couples eloped to Gretna Green, and, the story goes, were married by the blacksmith over the anvil. <BR> <BR>There is now a small tourist industry built around it...but Las Vegas it ain't! <BR> <BR>See, me, I would hate Inverlochy or Dalhousie, which are no doubt great for other people. If I had my time over again, I'd get married somwhere where the scenery was truly awe-inspiring, out of doors, for choice..and we sure can give you that choice. Or if I was fleeing to remote beauty somewhere like Skye or Islay or Highland Perthshire. <BR> <BR>So anyway, you could look at <BR> <BR>http://www.scotland-info.co.uk/scotland.htm <BR> <BR>which has a great link for Scottish weddings. The important thing to remember is that you have to get the banns read first. <BR> <BR>Meantime have a look at Hotel Eilean Iarmain on Skye or the Pier house at Port Appin. Thanks for all the good advice. I passed it on to her, and she was thrilled. She had no idea that there was a place that one can just ask and get so many good answers! She thought I had really done something out of the ordinary! They particularly want to get married in Scotland (if she said why, I don't remember), and I don't think difficulty in getting to London and Paris from there is a real issue for them.
