Romantic Paris - Just a notion?
 

Hi, <BR>Is there such a thing as a romantic hotel in Paris - with a room under the eaves where you walk out onto a little balcony and have views over the rooftops of Paris. A period bathroom with a freestanding claw bath and is within a 900 franc budget? Am I just dreaming or what!! - Sandra

The Hotel d'Angleterre on rue Jacob on the Left Bank.Was originally the British Embassy in the 1700's-had our anniversary trip to Paris last year, stayed in a room on the top floor, up crooked winding stairs, a room(suite) with a fireplace, windows overlooking the courtyard, a huge bath, cozy, quiet and the desk will make all reservations for you, call cabs, happy to be helpful. <BR>Go-enjoy!

D'Angleterre*** has four suites with balcony and/or fireplace FF 1600.- or more plus continental breakfast + FF 62.- just for your information! <BR>Standard doubles FF 900.- and more.

Try the Mars Hotel in the 7th, get the room on the 5th floor- it has a view of the Eiffel Tower from the balcony! Great value too!

Very friendly reception. You can consider it as a 3 stars with the prices of a two stars hotel. Rooms are spacious with beautiful mural frescoes in Sienna soil colors of views of Paris. Velvet and flourished Wilton-carpet All rooms have mini-bar, satellite TV, direct phone and hair-dryer. The biggest rooms are on the highest floor (mansardees) and you have a wonderful view on the roofs of Paris. Single for 380 FF, double for 450 to 550 FF (with balcony and more spacious). A hotel where the owner has his job in his heart :he will do anything to please you. And that’s not so frequent! Sandra! I am so sorry! I skimmed your post and did not notice the price -we were in Paris for an anniversary and my husband went all out! Sorry, we do go to Paris every fall and we have stayed at the Danube on rue Jacob, Left Bank, very charming, less than the Angleterre, and we stayed on the Isle St Louis at a place called the Lutece, get a room on the top floor, under the eves, beamed ceiling, huge bathroom,tiny bedroom, but the bed is big!And open the windows and look out over the rooftops, sooo romantic, they have a fireplace in the lobby.Hope this makes up for my mistake, Bon Voyage!

I would recommend staying on Ile St Louis. I have stayed at the Lutece and St. Louis. Both are moderately expensive. I have also seen recommended Jeu de Paume, which is more expensive. All are housed in older buildings (17th century, I beleive). Rooms I stayed in not overly large. Main reason for recommending them is the neighbourhood. Located in an island, lots of neat shops and great restaurants (including Berthillon ice cream store!). You get more of a sense of being in a village than in a large city. Traffic is less,since main street on island is not a "four laner". Plus from this location you are a block from Notre Dame, 1/2 block from Seine, 2 blocks from Metro,2/3 blocks from Rivoli St. etc... <BR>Enjoy! <BR>

Sandra: <BR>I share Mr. Shaw's affection for the Ile St. Louis. Two caveats. The Hotel St. Louis, where I stayed in April and May this year, has a well deserved reputation for disregarding reservations, which can be rather inconvenient. Also, they renovated the hotel at the first part of the year. The top 2 floors have balconies, and, the renovation was well done. However, the room prices were raised. Ours on the top floor (the largest) was 1300 FF a night plus breakfast. I recall the lowest rate at 900 FF or so, and that room would not have a balcony.
