Romantic hotel within an hour's drive of Glasgow

I'm due to spend a few days in Glasgow and Edinburgh visiting some friends, but would like a night's break from socialising by spending perhaps a night by Loch Lomond or somewhere similar with my partner. Somewhere that also does great food would be a plus. Can anyone recommend anywhere? I've tried searching previous posts but to no avail!

There is a big, posh hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond which has a good restaurant - but the name of it has completely gone out of my head! I can even picture it too!

Remembered it - the Cameron House Hotel. It's part of the DeVere group of hotels, so it should be pretty good.

There does seem to be smaller ones around Loch Lomond and nearby, eg in Luss or Drymen. If you run a search of "loch lomond hotels" in Google it comes up with quite a few.

I can highly recommend East Lochhead in Lochwinnoch. We stayed there in September 2002.

See their website...it is only 20 minutes or so from Glasgow airport and is very pleasant. Surprisingly rural for being so close to Glasgow.

http://www.eastlochhead.co.uk
Cameron House is terrific. It is an upscale hotel and also has very posh lodges. It is right on Loch Lomond and the restaurant is very good.

I haven't stayed at East Lochead - but it is probably fine too.

Either one should fill the bill - Cameron House is more expensive.

Thanks everyone, I'll check both these out, Cameron House may depend on a decent Christmas bonus, so keep your fingers crossed.

On the basis that, even if I had the money I wouldn't stay at Cameron House (not my kind of place), my recommendations would include at No. 1 Monachyle Mhor at Balquhidder, the Ardeonaig on Loch Tay side (might be stretching the hour a bit) and the Kames at Tighnabruaich

Thanks Sheila, I've booked Monachyle Mhor at Balquhidder - the food looks very promising!

I hope you love it. I've not been but it's on my list. Friends honeymooned there and raved about it.

Sheila: you brought back memories from the deep dark past. My ex and I (plus our Scotty and Airedale) stayed at the Kames Hotel for Hogmanay way back in the 70's. Except for one elderly lady who checked in and never left, we were the only guests and the whole village wined and dined us for the 4 days we were there. Back then they did not open Dec/Jan but when we rang to inquire I guess they decided "what the heck" and took our booking.

It was very homey back then and we had a WONDERFUL time first footing and learning to country dance, etc. But it was not what I would call a romantic getaway. But that was a loooong time ago - what is the hotel like now?

We're in Tighnabruaich this New Year. But at the Royal, not the Kames.

I'll let you know.

Thanks, Sheila. I'll look forward to your report (or you can e-mail me directly). I haven't been over to the Kyles of Bute since then and was thinking of going back on my next trip to Scotland sometime next year.

Have a great time!

Hi.

Is Inverness too far for you? Try the Dunain Park Hotel. Find it through Google; worth a look.

You're welcome.

Sheila, just thought I'd post and thank you for your great recommendation, Monachyle Mhor at Balquhidder was a delight. Great food, lovely little hotel which was refreshingly modern in that is was marvellously chintz free!

When I say modern I don't mean in a boring Holiday Inn way, I mean in a glass bricks in the bathroom kind of way.

There's ony abut 10 rooms, and I was anticipating a nice quiet night before embarking on hogmanay until we got chatting to a couple of other couples there. The staff finally gave up on us at about 3am.

Thankfully the mountain air cleared my head the next day. Great place!
