I went to Romnia back in 2007 (and have a very long trip report on this forum somewhere). We had two full weekends and the 5 weekdays in between. We landed and departed from Bucharest. We did include Maramures as a one-night stop and we were really pushing it to get up there and back - our route was a loop, driving up through Bistrita and back through Cluj Napoca. The short time in Maramures left us longing for more. There is much to explore in Transylvania; I was absolutely obsessed with the fortified walled churches in the tiny villages.
To give you an idea, here was our itinerary: Thursday, September 21- Friday, September 22 ATL to Bucharest via CDG (Hotel Rembrandt) Saturday, September 23 Bucharest to Fagaras via train (Hotel Montana – 2 nights) (family roots near here) Sunday, September 24 family events in Fagaras and village of Dridif Monday, September 25 Fagaras to Sighisoara (Hotel Sighisoara) meet guide, driving route through Saxon Southern Transylvania: -Cincsor -Cincu -Merghindeal -Dealu Frumos -Agnita -Alma Vii -Biertan Tuesday, September 26 Sighisoara to Maramures, sleep at Badu Izei (home stay) -Bistrita -Salistea de Sus -Ieud -Barsana Wednesday, September 27 Maramures to Cluj-Napoca (Hotel Onix) -photo walk through village of our homestay (the highlight of the trip!) -Sapanta -Sighet -Surdesti Thursday, September 28 Cluj-Napoca to Sibiu (Hotel Imparatul Romanilor) -Alba Iulia -Rasinari Friday, September 29 Sibiu to Brasov (Aro Palace Hotel) -Carta -Rasnov -Bran Saturday, September 30 Brasov to Bucharest (Hotel Rembrandt – 2 nights) -Prejmer -Harman leave guide in Bucharest Sunday, October 1 Bucharest Monday, October 2 Bucharest to home |
Renting a car is better than train, since you are planning a North to South trip, train takes quite long. We took a train from Bucharest to Brasov and rented a car there for our Transylvanian tour. The train takes 3-4 hours and it's a nice trip thorugh the mountains.
