OOH, romance!
The suit is a good idea, if you can find the time. I agree with not buying her any clothes - even if you can predict taste, Italian sizing is different and it would kill the moment if (god forbid) it didn't fit. I have an idea! Perhaps you could buy her an Italian handbag (Furla maybe, or if you are really flush, Fendi or D&G or something of that nature) and fill it with surprises for that evening in the city you are in. For example: 1. tickets to the opera or a play that's going on in whatever city you are in 2. A picture of a romantic restaurant (and then take her to that restaurant for dinner after the opera/play) 3. A corkscrew (for the bottle of wine you will purchase to drink on the steps of the Piazza di spagna after dinner- don't forget plastic cups!) 4. A plastic replica of one of the city's famous monuments and stroll by it at night, making sure to have someone take your picture there. You could do this in any one of the three cities, and she'd have the trinkets as well as the bag as a memento. Or you could just relax and have a good time. It is pretty much guaranteed to be romantic no matter what you do. ;) |
My wife and I went to Florence and Rome 30 years ago on our honeymoon. Went back for our 25th, plus Venice.
My tips: Rome- Trevi Fountain at dusk when the lights come on and the Piazza Navona for dinner. Il Tartufo for dinner should still work. Florence- shopping for jewelry by the Ponte Vecchio- great stores on the side streets. Better selection and more interesting pieces at much better prices. I bought my wife a ring and she still wears it complete with the memories. Bought another ring for her the second time. Also go to Piazale Michaelangelo across the Arno and look over the river at all of Florence. Venice- best enjoyed by walking around and going wherever the spirits lead you. Look in the window of the shops and go inside to know Venice better. Our favorites- the shops making and selling Carnivale masks or selling wine in bulk. Also try Murano or the Lido. And everywhere- stop in any pasticerria late in the afternoon for desert and espresso. |
