Roman Pass and Catacombs

Hi folks!

I found that the Roman Pass in not available at the moment. Would anybody happen to know why?

I am also curious to know whether the catacombs are as popular in Rome as the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums so that it would be foolhardy to try and visit them in the month of august without booking a tour. Would I run the risk of facing huge lines if I decided to go by myself?

Thanks

No, but there were several months last year when the Roma & Piu Pass was not available. Perhaps they've add a supply problem or plan to increase prices. It might be available again by the time you visit.

The catacombs are more difficult to get to so not as many people visit.

One option for getting there on your own http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...directions.cfm

I would search for the official Catacomb website to recheck (my info is a few yrs old in the post but still most likely accurate) which day & time each catacomb is closed.

As I mention in my post San Sebastian Catacomb has nowhere for the tourbuses to park like the other 2 catacombs so no problems there with crowds. Regards, Walter

Thank you all very much for the tips. Will check the official catacomb website.

The Catacombs of Priscilla are right in Rome and easy to get to.

The Rome Tourist Board appears to be updating their website. I imagine the Roma Pass will be sorted out soon.

If you are looking at the catacombs at San Sebastiano or Callisto, just take the 118 bus from the Circo Massimo metro stop, across Via San Gregorio from the Circus Maximus.

Be aware that on the return to the city, you must either walk up the street kind of across from San Sebastian about 400 meters to the 2 lane road, or up the Appian Way, heading back towards town to where the way becomes 2 way. Or you can simply take the bus from directly in front of either away from the city, and enjoy and nice ride to the outskirts of town and return.
