Roman Forum

Does anyone know about renovations being done at he Forum?

I was in Rome about a week and a half ago and they were still doing renovations. You could walk around the Forum but not actually through it.

oh - how did I miss this - how long does it go on? We'll be there later this month...

illnative, I didn't know about it either prior to our visit. Don't know how I missed it, but this was our 4th visit to Rome so I didn't do the research I normally do.

There was a semi-large building set up near the Arch of Constantine so it looked like the renovation (or maybe archaeological dig?) could go on for awhile. If you still want great views, head up to Capitol Hill and walk past the museum. Not quite the same as actually walking through, but makes for a great picture and you can get somewhat of a sense of the Forum if it's still closed off.

I didn't see anything about it in my research but my friend who just returned from Rome mentioned it to me.

bummer - we were stopping off here in Rome just to spend some quality time in the Forum. I, like you, figured I didn't need to do the intense research since we have been there before. lesson learned...luckily there are a few other things to do in Rome :)

We just returned from our trip a couple of days ago.

I am not sure wha my friend was talking about but the forum and Palantine Hill sites are both open. There is scaffolding around many places in Rome but that is not unusual.

Will post a trip report next week when I get back from a short trip this weekend.

Well, when we were there last month the road that goes right through the center of the Forum was definitely closed off so I'm sure your friend probably had the same experience. I'm glad it's open now and that you were able to go through it!

We just got back and the Roman Forum is indeed open - it is not free anymore - so you can't walk up the Sacra Via straight from the Colosseum anymore - you have to buy tickets and enter at the Palatine or off the major street (can't think of its name). It's definitely open though.
