The 3-day Roma Pass has been replaced by a 72-hour pass. It covers 2 free museum/archaelogical site entrances, discounts for others, and 72 hours of use of all means of public transit.

It does cover the Colosseum and Castel Sant'Angelo, but it wouldn't be worth buying it for just those two things. The Colosseum costs €12, and Castel Sant'Angelo costs €10, while the Roma Pass costs €38.50. If those are the only two covered sites you visit, it would be difficult to use enough public transportation to justify the difference in cost.

A single ticket for public transportation in Rome costs €1.50, and is good for 100 minutes, including unlimited transfers in any direction, but only one admission to the metro system. If you used more than three of these tickets in one day, you might just be justified in buying a Roma Pass. I myself rare use that much public transportation, because many of the places I visit are so close to each other than I end up walking between them.

You mention a visit to the Villa Borghese, and to the Tempio di Esculapio in the Villa. The temple is on a little artificial island in a little artificial lake. It's not a Roman temple, but an 18th century decorative element. I think you have to view it from the shore of the lake. You can rent boats to row on the lake, but I don't think you can get out of the boat on the island. In any case, the Villa Borghese Gardens and the Tempio di Esculapio are free.

There's another Temple of Aesculapius (Italian Esculapio), a real ancient Roman one, on the Isola Tiburina, in the middle of the Tiber River. It's part of the hospital building; I don't know how accessible it is. There's been a hospital on that island since ancient times, and Aesculapius was the Greek god of medicine.

If you meant to visit the Borghese Gallery, also part of the Villa Borghese, that costs €13 (€20 until the 4th of February), and might make getting the Roma Pass worthwhile, if the visit is in addition to the other two places you want to visit. Since the pass covers only two free sites, you'd only get the reduced entry on the third visit. In the case of the Borghese Gallery, it would be a savings of €6.50. At the moment, until February 4th, there is a special exhibit on Bernini, which means the tickets cost €7 more than usual, so the savings would be greater. In fact, to save the most money with the Roma Pass, you'd want to make this one of your first two visits.

Visits to the Borghese Gallery have to be reserved in advance, and you have to arrive half an hour before your reserved time. The reservation fee of €2 has to be paid even if you have a Roma Pass. You need to call to make the reservation, and tell them you'll be paying with the Roma Pass.

(Ignore the mention of "seats". They're selling places in the timed visits.)

You get two hours to see the museum and then everyone has to leave so the next group can enter.

By the way, there's a 72-hour transportation pass called Roma 72H, which gives you just the transportation part of the Roma Pass. I never get that when I'm in Rome, because I find it cheaper to buy single tickets. The pass costs €18, the equivalent of 12 single tickets. I would have a very hard time using that many tickets in 72 hours.

For the Roma Pass to be cost effective, you have to visit the more expensive sites first. Your free visits are the first two places you enter and deduct from your card that way. After the two free entries come off, then you get the discounted entries.

Deepanjali has started three topics, and got lots of detailed information, but has never returned to reply to any of the topics, so I don't even know if he/she is even reading the answers.

Dear Bvlenci.. thank you for your suggestions.. I did read all of them.. I am already in Italy and had intermittent access to internet hence couldn’t revert. And yes as per ur suggestions didn’t take the Roma Pass.. went to the Colosseum today.. found it empty at 7.45am .. all to ourselves on Sunday morning. First one to enter it.. thank you

I'm glad we weren't sending out posts into a black hole! I'm also glad you got into the Colosseum before any crowds. It's a much different experience when it's crowded.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.
