Rock Star Tour
We are looking for a tour of the Rock Star's homes and related sites --- Mick Jaggers, Sir Elton John's, etc. Found a Beatles tour, but not just a general English rock star tour --- Abbey Road, the house where Jimmy Hendrix died and so on. Checked Grayline and The Original London Walks tours, but couldn't find anything.
Does this tour exist or are there any other similar tours? Surely there must be in a music city like London but I can't seem to find any information. Anyone???? |
I've been looking for such a tour for years now. We've just had to do our own research and stop by sites on our own.
It seems that the tour companies think that all we care about are the Beatles. |
Hang around Monaco...
|
TudorPrincess -- where in the world did you begin "research" to find the homes and addresses??? Guess we will have to go the same route. Maybe the facination is an "American" thing!! they could AT LEAST sell "maps" so we could find the homes easier.
All I can say is that the locals are missing out on a lot of money!! Please share your process with me, if you don't mind. My friend REALLY wants to do this, and I don't know where to begin. |
duchess...for some it's not so difficult. jimi hendrix even has his own blue plaque on the house (right next to handel's house)
HENDRIX, Jimi (1942-1970), Guitarist and Songwriter, lived here 1968-1969. 23 Brook Street, Mayfair, W1 Westminster 1997 you can find all the london blue plaques listed here: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.1499 only people dead for 20+ years have plaques on their houses, i'm afraid. |
Jimmy died at the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch.
duchesswilliams, various places, books, Behind the Music, internet, right here on Fodors, band websites. Golden Tours did have a rock 'n'roll tour at one time but it didn't sound interesting to me. |
Back-roads Touring Co. has one:
http://www.beatles-beatles-beatles.com/ (not just Beatles, despite the name). So does Viator: http://tinyurl.com/29qkwr , though it may be the same tour, I can't tell. Google tells all. According to one site I found, Jagger now lives in a UKP 3,500 a night suite in Claridge's when he's in London. Jerry Hall got the house in Richmond when they were divorced -- er, annulled. |
you can always sneak into st george's hill to see some stars.
|
I could be wrong but Mick and Jerry had adjoining homes in Richmond and I thought he still had a place there?
I haven't been to Richmond for a few trips. |
Don't know if you're a Def Leppard fan but if you're on Cheyne Walk checking out Mick's old house (forgot the #)around the corner is Old Church St. #44 is the house that Steve Clark died in.
The tour that fnarf99 found looks good though. |
fnarf999 is right! You want the Backroads Touring Rock N Roll tour that leaves from outside the Hard Rock Cafe. http://www.beatles-beatles-beatles.com/ We took what they're now calling the "Afternoon Tour" five years ago and at that time it was just great.
We saw Jimmy Page's house, Van Morrison's house, Mick Jagger's apartment, Elton John's former home, Pete Townshend's student apartment, plus a lot of places where rock events happened. The tour, if it's still the same, is given in a minibus that holds about 10 people max, which is nice. It also takes you into a lot of residential neighborhoods that you wouldn't normally see as a tourist. We still talk about how much we enjoyed it. |
To read up on these spots, you can get a copy of "Rock and Roll Traveler/Great Britain and Ireland" by Glinert and Perry. Hey, what do you know. I just checked my copy of the book, and it's a Fodors publication. :)

Thanks so much, fellow posters. I found the link to Back Roads Touring and, sure enough ---- they have the tour we are looking for!!!
The Brits should consider advertising this a little more, as Americans are very curious to do this sort of tour --- they are missing out on some $$$$$$$. Again, thanks for your assistance! |
