roadtrip from edinburgh to isle of skye

we are planning to drive from edinburgh to isle of skye on 25th september. i want to know whats the best route to take that is scenic and short..since i will have my 2 year old with me?
on our way back from isle, we will take the fort william-glencoe-glasgow route ( we have to catch our flight from glasgow). we also plan to stay a night in glencoe to explore glencoe a bit.
wanna know the route from edinburgh to isle? should we do glencoe first on our way to isle? if not, is it wise to do edin to isle in a day (nonstop) ? i am so confused.. please help!

There is NO short route. It will be an all day drive which ever route you take. In general, Edinburgh to ft William to the bridge/Kyle of Lochalsh will be fastest . . . But it will be a looooong drive. How many nights are you staying on Skye? If it was me I'd stop over/break the journey in Glenoce on the way TO Skye

Ferry to Maillag then the route Ft William route- following the course of the famous West Highlands Railway - to many the most scenic in Britain.

If not rushed make foray into the bleak Rannoch Moor:

I've only been by train and if you want a great day out take the train thru it to Rannoch Moor Hotel - you can drive to the hotel and if looking for a unique place to stay:

Shortest route is probably the A830 to Fort William then A 82 to Glasgow.

One can only reach Rannoch Station and The Moor of Rannoch Hotel by train or by car along the B846 just north of Pitlochry. The A82 only passes by the western most portion of Rannoch Moor.

dear PQ is blowing smoke again . . . First of all as historytraveler says -- the Moor itself is not accessible from your route. But even more important . . . you will have already driven past it and got a glimpse from the A82 on your way from Edinburgh to Glencoe. (he does tend to recommend Rannoch Moor to everyone)

Yes indeed - so exceptional - don't skirt it but take time to delve into it -for some reason janis always disses the Rannoch Moor - not sure why???

I have never once 'dissed' Rannoch Moor. But -- as you've been told countless times -- there is no access from the west side. This OP will be NOWHERE near the only road into the Moor.

Okaaaay ?? Proving what exactly? If you read your link . . . It talks about turnouts for photos from the A82. That is the road to glencoe that I described with views, and does NOT go into the Moor. Carry on.

I realized that janis that you mentioned A82 and thought I'd give a link to what to expect on the road - gees! Relax!
