Roadtrip
I am going on a roadtrip the end of December-January.
Looking for recommendations of things to do/see/restaurants/etc. 1. Berlin 2. Nuremberg 3. Munich 4. Eibsee 5. Zugspitze 6. Innsbruck 7. Salzburg 8. Hallstatt 9. Vienna |
Sorry - but a road trip through that list in the dead of winter makes no sense at all.

If I had 3.5 weeks to see those cities in Dec./Jan., I would almost certainly consider trains. if I had less time, there is no way I'd consider a car! YMMV.

Hi amanda,
I'm another one who is going to suggest that you consider doing the trip by train. Most of your destinations are cities, and cars are really not useful there -- parking is expensive and hard to find (hotels in Munich, for example, charge 8-12€ per night for parking, and parking at the Eibsee is a flat fee of 4€); traffic is dense and complicated with trams, buses, bicycles, and pedestrians; and of course gas is expensive. If you decide to use trains, you can use the Werdenfels Ticket (22€ for the first passenger and 7€ for each additional up to 5 people) for the trips including Munich, Eibsee, & Zugspitze station; Werdenfels + Innsbruck to get to Innsbruck; and the Bavaria Ticket to get from Nuremberg to Munich. Each region of Germany will have similar regional deals. Have fun as you plan! s |
I love road trips, too.
But that's the time of year I would not want to drive unless I had to. At that time of the year, you have only some 7.5 hrs of daylight. If there is any daylight and not just clouds, rain or snow. In addition, you can have quite some traffic on the roads as the Austrian ski resorts start the winter season at Christmas. When you rent in one country (Germany) and drop off in another (Austria), you can incur steep extra fees. |
