Roads from Stuttgart to Dachau
We will be in Stuttgart next week for the entire week with a rental car. I really would like to visit Dachau and was wondering what are the conditions of the roads/Autobahn for that drive. I have heard there is a lot of construction going on with A8. We would be traveling on Wednesday or Thursday.
Thanks Gary |
Welll, between Stuttgart and Ulm max speed is limited to 100 or 120 sometimes 80kmh, radar controlled every few kilometers. (Those swabian bastards :D ) Not that much construction, but very havy traffic most of the time. From Ulm to Munich esp. from Augsburg the whole Autobahn is under construction with frequent stops and a max speed of 80kmh. You need to be lucky and don't go there during peak hours.

logos999,
Thanks for the information. I thought we would leave Stuttgart about 7am on Thursday morning. ViaMichelin states about 2 hours and 3 minutes travel time. Gary |
A little under 3 hours should do it normally, but when you leave at 7am, you'll be in Ulm around 8am. That's peak traffic at the worst possible place at the worst possible time. I'd rather leave Stuttgart at 9am or a lot earlier than 7am.

Why not take the train? It takes between 2:42 and 3:30 hrs, with one change at the Munich main station to the S-Bahn to Dachau.
Check www.bahn.de |
Perhaps I am not reading that site correctly but it looks as if the cost for my wife and I to travel on Thursday 8 Apr from Stuttgart to Munich and return is over 100 euros. Am I missing something?

Don't use the Bahn, it's expensive, unreliable and...
A car beats public transport in Germany any time, even when you have to wait for a few or more minutes in a traffic jam. It's just the way it is. |

...and the usual ideological stuff comes from Logos. >A car beats public transport in Germany any time, even when you have to wait for a few or more minutes in a traffic jam. It's just the way it is. What a nonsense. It may be true in rural Bavaria or wherever it is you live, Logos, but not on the mainlines. I have a very good permanent comparison as I always alternate doing the same few trips by car and by train. If I don't have to transport large items, I ALWAYS prefer trains. So much better use of your time, and often faster. However, there are always a few fellows who just can't bear the fact that it's not THEM with the hands on the steering wheel. |

No. You are reading it correct. It is close to or somewhat less than a day of car rental plus gas plus parking. |
From city center to city center the train may be good. If it's on time, that is. For all the other trips trains aren't really good..
