Road trip Spain

My husband and I are going on a long road trip to Spain; my husband wants to give his new car a run! I decided on an itinerary -well, it was more or less going in a straight line towards the Atlantic and then making our way back!. I have already booked the hotels too. Now that the itinerary is done, I want to make sure I don't miss anything very important which falls on the route. If you are familiar with these regions, perhaps you can drop me a few hints? Thank you! Itinerary :
Day 1 : Head from home (Switzerland) towards Spain, halt for the night close to Perigueux
Day 2 : Drive to Bilbao (reach by mid day)
Day 3 : at Bilbao
Day 4 : Drive to Burgos (short drive)
Day 5 : Drive to Leon
Day 6 : at Leon
Day 7: Drive to Santiago de Compostela
Day 8: at Santiago de compostela
Day 9 : Drive to Salamanca
Day 10 : at Salamanca
Day 11 : Drive to Madrid via Segovia
Day 12 : at Madrid (I have previously stayed here for 5 days, so one day now will do)
Day 13 : Drive to Pamplona (via Zaragoza?)
Day 14: at Pamplona
Day 15: Drive back towards Switzerland, staying at mid-way point in France
Day 16 : Drive home

It's a lot of driving but if you feel up to it, I don't see any red flags.

@sparkchaser : true..its about 4000 kms all told. But my husband and I enjoy road trips, so that's fine with us.

Outside of Zaragoza, to the east and a bit south if I recall is THIS . Give yourself several hours. We spent the night. There is a lovely monastery there. You can sleep there or go to a local hotel. It's very reasonable in next town over.

You don't mention when this great 'road trip adventure' will begin.

@lincasanova : Thank you for the idea, the pictures look lovely!

Suja Jul 9th, 2014 07:21 AM

@Robert2533: Its quite soon, from 31st of July.

If the weather ever changes it will be warm here in Spain, as well as being high season. Madrid will be full of tourist. Pamplona is normally quiet in August as everyone who can, heads for the beach or in the mountains.

@Robert2533 : I guessed it wont be the best time of the year to travel, but we have our own constraints..we'll have to make the best of it.

FWIW, I thought Salamanca deserved a minimum of two full days.

@kja : Thanks for the input..

If you have been to Madrid then maybe drop it from this itinerary. Then add it somewhere else. You are doing a lot of one nighters and they do not work.

Suja Jul 10th, 2014 08:46 AM

@rbeisasacra: I really liked Madrid, that's why I added it - and we aren't going much out of the way for it. But I will consider it once more. Burgos is the only one nighter we have in spain - the other two one-nighters are in France, on the way up and back.

I visited a number of your destinations last year and the prior year. I agree Salamanca deserves more time, think I spent four nights there. Love Spain!

Here's a link to last year's pics. If you play in slideshpw mode, you can see the text I added to many of the pics.
