Road Trip: Munich, Germany to Northern Italy
 

I just came back from an amazing road trip (Frankfurt-Munich-Ettal-Zurich-Alsace-Baden-Baden-Frankfurt-will do a report here soon) which was relatively easy on the driver (2 hours worth of driving a day with Ettal-Zurich being the longest at 3.5 hr) - and looking at new route for next year. Ideally, want to keep driving between destinations at 2 hours AND (important!) AVOID the hair pin Alpian roads. would love to hear from the experts if such trip is possible between Munich, Germany and Northern Italy to may be fly out of Zurich (through Austria to possibly Lakes Garda, Como, Milan then through Switzerland?)

There are some major 4 lane highways through the Alps so you would be able to avoid narrow, winding Alpine roads for that. But I know a lot of the roads around the various lakes are narrow (can't tell you about all roads for all lakes) and if you want to head up into the mountains that will mean mountain roads.

We took the major road from Stresa (on Lake Maggiore) up towards Switz and the road along the lake was very winding and narrow - with just driveway reflectors between the road and the edge of the lake in some places. When we started climbing up to the tunnel heading to Lucern we found the road was a series of switchbacks up the mountain.

Suggest you look at both viamichelin.com and google maps/earth to see the specifics for the roads that you will want to drive. But after doing a lot of driving in Switz - yes, one off the major hghways the roads can be narrow, winding and have very limited shoulders before a steep drop into a valley.

Thank you, nytraveler. I saw that there is Munich to Verona train and I am thinking if I took it and then starting driving portion from Verona (Garda nearby) onto Como - I would avoid the hairpins in Italy and would just have to plan the Switz part carefully:)
