Road trip along the Rhine from Switzerland, return through Belgium etc.

We are in the early stages of planning a 16 day car trip in late September. Our itinerary currently looks like this

Day 1. Travel from Rapperswil to Konstanz and drive to Basel via Radolfzell and Singen (we have spent quite a bit of time in Stein am Rhein etc.). Stop on the way to visit Augusta Raurica ruins. Night and late afternoon in Basel.

Day 2, morning in Basel lunch in Freiburg stopping in Belchen if the weather is good. Afternoon in Freiburg. Overnight in Strasbourg. We have previously spent several days between Colmar and Strasbourg but only had lunch in Strasbourg.

Day 3. Morning and lunch in Strasbourg. Back into Germany. Quick stops in Baden Baden, Rastatt and Karlsruhe. Overnight in either Speyer or Worms.

Day 4. Lunch in Mainz and quick look around. Visit Bingen and Mäuseturn in the afternoon. Overnight in Boppard

Day 5 - Day 8 in Boppard. During this time we will take a day trip on the Rhine, visit castles and Kolbenz.

Day 8 leave Boppard, lunch in Bonn, overnight in Köln.

Day 9 morning and lunch in Köln. Overnight in Arnhem.

Day 10 either overnight in Amsterdam or in Rotterdam/Delft.

Day 11 either Netherlands or Brugge.

Day 12 Ghent/Brussels

Day 13 Luxembourg

Day 14 Metz/Nancy

Day 15 Route des Cretes night Ballon d'Alsace or Mulhouse

Day 16 back home to Rapperswil

The main point of the trip is to travel along the Rhine but we thought we would do a whirlwind sightseeing trip on the way back.

I would welcome any comments on changes to the schedule, places to stay, things to look at.

Thanks, Lynn

Hi, we live in Bonn. I would spend less time in Boppard. Can you fit in Rothenburg ob der Tauber? If so, stay with Karin, an older German lady who rents out rooms in her home. She's 5 minutes outside of the city wall and makes a MEAN breakfast (http://www.haus-karin.de/). Grab a Doner Kebap in Bonn - they're great. I would spend additional time in Holland - spend at least one day in Amsterdam and maybe an overnight in Delft too. Delft is a quaint little town - see the porcelain factory (the blue and white china) - I can dig up our hotel there too if you'd like. Amsterdam was great to visit, we thought. We stayed there at the Hotel Estherea. Brugge shouldn't be missed. There, we stayed with Benno and Freida at the Absoluut Verhulst B&B. Hope this helps a little. I typed it too quickly for sure.

Thanks srice. We spent a few days in Nürnburg a while ago and took a day trip to Rothenburg ODT.

I would be interested in your hotel details from Delft if it is not too difficult for you to dig them out.

Well we travel with two little ones all the time - they're now 36 months and 22 months - so I know what it's like! The place we stayed at in Delft is the Herberg de Emauspoort. They were great and extremely helpful. Carried our luggage for us and even ordered dinner in for us since it was raining and our girls were tired. Breakfast is served in their little bakery shop.

After some more research and some advice from the board we have come up with a new itinerary plus an alternative. What are your thoughts.

Day 1 Start from Rapperswil drive to Kreuzlingen to start the trip properly. Kreuzlingen to Basel, overnight Basel.

Day 2 Basel to Strasbourg, lunch Freiburg 1 night Strasbourg.

Day 3 Leave Strasbourg in the early afternoon for Speyer, overnight Speyer.

Day 4 Leave Speyer late morning, lunch Mainz, visit Bingen, 4 nights Boppard.

Day 8 leave Boppard, visit Bonn, arrive Köln midday, overnight Köln.

Day 9 depart Köln arrive Amsterdam midday. 3 nights Amsterdam.

Day 12 leave Amsterdam. lunch Rotterdam 2 nights Brugge

Day 14 leave Brugge travel to Lille with sidetrip along Calais to Boulogne coast. Overnight Lille

Day 15 leave Lille for Luxemburg, arrive midday, overnight Luxemburg.

Day 16 leave Luxemburg. lunch Colmar, home to Rapperswil.

Alternative.

Day 1 Rapperswil to Basel via Kreuzlingen. Overnight Basel

Day 2 Basel to Strasbourg, 2 nights Strasbourg

Day 4 Strasbourg to Boppard, 4 nights Boppard

Day 8 Boppard to Köln, 2 nights Köln

Day 10 Köln to Amsterdam, 4 nights Amsterdam

Day 14 Amsterdam via Rotterdam and Brussels to Luxemburg, 2 nights Luxemburg

Day 16 Luxemburg via Colmar home to Rapperswil.

Any comments or advice?

Day 9 depart Köln arrive Amsterdam midday. 3 nights Amsterdam.

Finding parking in Amsterdam can be a real problem. May I suggest for Day 9 - Koln to Delft, 3 nights in Delft.

From Delft you could easily take car trips to Utrecht, Gouda, Rotterdam, Leiden, Haarlem, etc... Instead of driving into Amsterdam, I would take the train in for the day(maybe cheaper than parking and definately less of a hassle). And if you want to visit den Haag and Scheveningen, the "only way" to go from Delft is to take Tram #1.

I too can recommend the Herberg de Emauspoort in Delft, which has a small car park on the grounds. They are located in the center of Delft, just behind the Nieuwe Kerk. Rates 2 years ago were EURO 82.50 for double, breakfast included. It's a small (12 rooms) hotel with a delicious bakery on site. Their website is www.emauspoort.nl

Enjoy your travels. Peace.

We have taken the advice from this board (thanks all) and had a rethink about what is actually feasible with a small child! This is our revised itinerary.

4 days Boppard, Hotel Garni Gunther booked.
4 days Delft, Hotel de Emausproort booked.
3 days Lille, Citadines apartment booked.
3 days Trier, still deciding between the Romisher Kaiser and an apartment.

We will be making day trips to other areas of interest. This means that if the toddler is not feeling like a trip, I can stay at our base with her rather than having to move on because we are travelling to our next night's accommodation.

I would love to hear any other tips for our trip.

Thanks Lynn

I would stay a little longer in Freiburg. The Cathedral there is beautiful; it was the only building that stood still during WWII bombings. Have lunch at one of the cafes by the Cathedral and ask for "flammeküeche.
