Road conditions in Scotland

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about the road conditions in northern Scotland in January.
I'm a bit concerned that driving could be difficult at this time and that roads could be closed.
Can anyone help please?

very difficult to answer!! Of course there can blizzards at that time and if you are going to high land there is a risk of road closures.However this can happen any time between early November and late March!!! Do you have a set itinery - it may be best to be flexible.

Just spent several weeks in Scotland this summer. Found the driving a real pain even then. The best roads in the north are two lanes with no shoulder. Are you sure you want to go then? Have you considered trains and/or ferries?

Meeghan;

you are coming at about the worst time of year for blockages; but it would help if we knew what you meant by "northern" Scotland. If you're on the west coast it'sa lot less of an issue because of the Gulf Stream. main roads are rarely blocked for any length of time and need a mixture of snow; cold and wind to achieve it. The AA (the equivalent of your AAA) will give information on the phone about all routes in advance as will the police- they tend to be over cautious, IMHO.

However, if you can be more specific amybe I can help a bit more?
