Riviera & Provence in October
My husband & I are planning our trip to the Riviera & Provence (2 weeks in each area) & are debating whether to go for the month of October or September. What would be the best time to see these two regions? We don't like to travel in hot weather but are concerned about getting lots of rain in October also. Any help would be much appreciated....Carol

I was there (Nice) for 10 days the end of sept/begining of Oct last year. The weather was perfect. Talking to some local shop owners, they did say that the time we were there is really the end of the good weather season, any later and you are prone to rainy weather. There were few tourists that time of the year, and it was really easy to get a chair on the beach.

It was sunny and 70 during the day there were a couple of nights where a light jacket was needed, but most of the times I was very comfortable in my short sleeved dress.

Hi Carol. I was there (in Nice) for a week in October one year and for four days in September the following year. During my October stay, the weather was wonderful -- warm days and no rain -- but during that September stay it rained two of the four days, so you just never know how Mother Nature is going to welcome you.

One factor that, IMO, weighs in favor of October is fall color. While nowhere near as colorful as, say, New England, many of the vines on buildings were a gorgeous orange-red and there were some vivid spots of color up in the mountains behind Nice.

Hi

Last year was an exceptionally warm fall. We were swimming outdoors until mid November.

World average temps here -

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/weather/historical/historical.htm

I would say go September.

Be advised that when the weather breaks it is often very violent.
