riverboat travel from Strasbourg, France to Basel, Switzerland
 

Hello,

I'm trying to find information about riverboat transportation from Strasbourg, France to Basel, Switzerland. All I find is river cruises that make many stops along the Rhein and are for multiple days. We want to train from Paris to Strasbourg, Fr, take a riverboat from Strasbourg to Basel, Switzerland, then rent a car to drive to Garmisch-P., Germany. This would be just a portion of our trip in Europe.

The stretch between Strasbourg and Basel is one of the least interesting parts of the Rhine. Frankly, I would rent a car in Strasbourg and continue from there--either along the Route du Vin in Alsace, or through the foothills of the Black Forest on the other side of the river. If you want to avoid charges for dropping the car in another country, cross from Strasbourg to Kehl in Germany and pick up your car there.

I wouldn't think it made economic sense to run a boat between the two. There are good train connections and it is easily drivable, both much faster ways to travel than by boat. Whilst it might attract a very small handful of tourists I wouldn't think there would be enough traffic to make it pay.

River cruises are a different thing entirely, calling in at Strasbourg and sometimes starting or ending in Basel.

Either rent a car or continue by train.

There are a few passenger boats that offer occasional trips along this part of the Rhine, but the land is fairly flat, with little scenery to interest tourists. The scenic part of the river, served by numerous boat operators, is between Mainz and Köln.
