river cruise wardrobe???
I know, I know, not another question about what to wear in Europe!!! Going on a Rhine-Mosel river cruise next week. Information packet says casual dress, but I guess I'm wondering just how casual! Have been to Europe several times, but this river thing is a first, so wondering how dressy the ladies get. This is a Grand Circle cruise if that means anything.
Thanks for any responses. Geri B |
My GCT cruise was in December 2006, and dress was definitely casual with a few nice things for the Big Dinners (like the Captain's Farewell). None of the women dressed up for the most part--primarily pants and tops and, of course, sweaters.

Hi geribrum:
I've taken two GCT river cruises and the dress was very casual, the only time anyone really dressed up was at the Captain's Dinner. I enjoy the fact that you do not have to dress formally on their cruises. Most women wore slacks, some skirts, blouses or layers, but then both of my cruises have been in the winter. I think you'll enjoy GCT. I'd take a nicer outfit in case you felt the need but it is definitely casual. Susan |
On those GCT river trips that I have taken the tourists dressed nicely casual. There is a difference. The last dinner was always slightly more dressy, just a nice cotton or linen dress, pants or skirt, oh and a top.

I'm a big believer in black slacks or midcalf skirt and black top. It can look classy and snappy with a nice scarf around your neck or an interesting piece of jewerly or a cool looking belt. A nice shawl adds elegance too. They pack flat and take up little room. Both can be worn again easily with a different accessory. Dramatic earrings are good too with the belt. You could just add a sparklie pin with the outfit or pearls and you would be a class act.

I came back in May from a Grand Circle cruise down the Danube in Eastern Europe. The dress was definitely casual. Sometimes we didn't even change from what we were wearing during the day.
I agree completely with southeastern. Black slacks have become the major part of my "vacation uniform" coupled with tops of various colors, scarves and other accessories. By the way, I was quite favorable impressed with the staff on the riverboat we were on. And the food was pretty good too. Enjoy. |
Thanks so much to all who responded. Makes my packing job much easier. Have settled on black, white and turquoise choices--as the latter seems to be my favorite color at the time. Have picked up a couple scarves for additional interest. Black pants all the way. Plus a couple patterned skirts that will work.
Original boat we were scheduled on was overbooked, so we're doing it in reverse and upgraded to a cabin with balcony. Just a few more days. Whee!! Geri |
the boat has a laundry service, at least on ours they did and it wasn't that expensive.

you will not be sorry you booked the room with the balcony. highlight being having the sliding door open during night cruising....morning before coming into dock, coffee in hand, wonderful photo opts. enjoy
