River boating on Irish Rivers

Has anyone ever rented a live aboard boat for a week or more to travel on the Irish rivers. Would love to hear what that was like. ..........Mary

Check out Bill's report. He frequents this board -- ask him more questions you might have.

I have not personally done this but I know many who have. In the summer it is beautiful. Many people start at Carrick on Shannon in Co. Leitrim. Bill's report was great to get a feel for what its like.

Haven't done it, but want to. You'll find tons of info if you do a search for "river cruising shannon" on google. It sounds great--not too expensive and you don't need to have boating experience.

Hi Mary:

Indeed I have done this and it is great fun, though I always follow that by saying, it's not for everybody. It is by no means luxurious and you will get wet, maybe very wet if the weather is not good, but we had a great time.

As Siobhan points out, Carrick on Shannon is a good starting point. There are others. We rented from Carrick Craft and our boat that was meant to sleep 4 was a good size for two. You'll want the extra room and I can't imagine how cramped that would have been with four people for the week. The two poeple in the berth below the cockpit would have incinerated because the heater blasted from that "room".

Please fell free to ask any questions that you like. Sorry that I didn't respond earlier but I was on the road in London and York last week. Fabulous time by the way.

Bill
