Rising Euro

Hi all,

The Euro has gone from about $1.26 to $1.32 in about 10 days.

Any thoughts?

Maybe that loonie who keeps on telling us the $ is going to be worth €0.0000001 is going to be right after all.

If we wait long enough - say, a thousand years.

Currencies fluctuate. They always have and always will.

Traveling to Paris in November was the smartest thing I've done all year.

Travelling to the US in May was the smartest thing I've done all year :)

MomDDTravel Dec 11th, 2008 06:24 AM

Many thoughts....and none of them good!
Yes Ira, I've also been watching the slow slide with some concern.

If I knew the direction of the Euro; you would be reading about it in my best selling book!!....lol

If I see more than just a creep up, I am thinking about prepaying some things.

Look, if there's one thing we've learned in the past six months, it's this.

You can't predict. Least of all about the future

If your home currency were the Zimbabwean dollar, it'd be a pretty good bet it'll devalue in six months' time. Actually it'll devalue 90% in six minutes.

But few on this board are that unfortunate. Whether the US, Eurozone, British, Australian or Canadian economy is the most screwed up right now is pretty damn moot. They're all in a mess, which currency the forex dealers choose to buy is completely impossible to guess, and the only sensible assumption you can possibly make about a foreign holiday next spring or summer is that your currency might be worth 25% more against theirs by then, or 25% less. So budget accordingly.

And if you like irresponsible betting, the odds of making money from it are probably higher on your local lottery, where at least you're competing with other amateurs.

Yikes!

Ira,

Make it stop, I have cooking classes to take next month in Paris. I already told my husband it is going to be "cheap" because of the lower rate.

trafaelwyr Dec 11th, 2008 09:22 AM

I'm off to Paris on 12/26 and have already bought some Euros about a couple of weeks ago. Still....$1.32 to the Euro is better than $1.50 or more. Here's hoping it'll downtrend again.

julia_t Dec 11th, 2008 09:53 AM

Bad news for all us Brits going skiing in Europe over the next few months with the present GBP - Euro rate as well.

travel2live2 Dec 11th, 2008 10:29 AM

It is $1.64 for us unfortunately! We just bought a house in Europe and the price has just increased nearly $30,000 in just a couple of weeks. :( But we are going to enjoy it to bits!

logos999 Dec 11th, 2008 12:37 PM

It's all over, not right now, but soon. Buy T-bills, or the state will buy them for you.

travelme Dec 11th, 2008 01:03 PM

Oh, that's a lot of popycock, Logos.

time to visit Hawaii?

Faina, has the dollar gone up against the Hawaiian currency? :-)

travelme Dec 11th, 2008 01:30 PM

Well, I am going to Portugal in the spring for a week. I paid for my lodging already and the airfare is also paid off. Tomorrow I am going march down to the bank to get some euro. About $500 worth. I have 130 euro left from my last trip. I dont care if I am getting a bad exchange rate here stateside. It will buy me peace of mind. Watching the $ on xe.com fall is not pleasant.
