Ring of Kerry

We're going to Ireland May 7 - 15. It's our first visit. We're flying into Dublin and renting a car. I keep reading/hearing about the ring of Kerry, but how crowded is it? I don't do well with crowds and am looking for a relaxing get-away. Any thoughts or alternatives? Or is it a must-do for first timers?

Hi samsmom! Just wanted to say that I will also be in Ireland during that time. I debated about doing the Ring of Kerry, but after much research decided on Dingle Peninsula instead. Many people said that Kerry would be more busy and that Dingle had a beautiful view as well!

Ho samsmom:

That time of year in Ireland won't be real crowded. I've been there in May a bunch of times and never screamed at the amount of traffic on the RoK. I was there last May and managed to avoid the traffic very well.

On the other hand, many will tell you, with one week and starting (and finishing?) in Dublin, that you should do Dingle instead. I tend to agree. Dingle gives you more to see mile for mile.

Yes, Dingle is worth the time, although you are quite a piece from Dublin. What else have you planned?
There is plenty to see for sure. Nice time of year.

Hi,

I definitely recommend doing the Ring of Kerry in May. I am a travel agent and did a tour of Ireland about mid-May and it was almost deserted along the Ring of Kerry. It was beautiful. I stopped and had lunch in the nicest little pub in Waterville, went north and came south on the Ring of Kerry and returned into Kenmare. Can't recommend it enough!

Be sure and take a day or two and see the Cliffs of Moher and/or the Aran Islands. Stay in Galway and take day trips! Also, southeast Ireland is a must-see, too. Waterford is spectacular and be sure to do the factory tour at the Waterford Crystal Factory.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions!

Best Regards,
Julia
