Rijstaffel ?

Please excuse the spelling. It has been sixteen years since we've been to Amsterdam and remember this fabulous dish with twenty or so little dipping plates in a circle.
Can someone help us with the proper name and a good restaurant to order this?
Thank you.

I think you spelled it right. Try Flamboyant just beside the Carre Theatre on the Amstel. There have been some previous posts on this. If you can get the search function to work, see if you can bring them up by searching for Amsterdam. Enjoy!

We recently returned from a visit to Amsterdam. Our host was a friend (American) who has been on a three year work assignment there. It was wonderful having our own personal tour guide.
He took us to his favorite Rijsttafel restaurant, Sama Sebo. The address I have is P.C. Hooftstraat 27. - 1071 BL Amsterdam.
It was great food and a really fun experience - we probably wouldn't have done it without our friend's suggestion. One other new thing we tried was "poffertjes". Hard to describe but really delicious.
Enjoy your return trip.

a friend and I ate at Sama Sebo in May 2000. It had been recommended by a local man, who has relatives in Amsterdam and goes back quite regularly. We enjoyed it, although with two of us, we only had a small combination order. We had also eaten a the Sea Palace earlier on our trip, while with a tour group. With a group, you get many more choices, which we enjoyed. No idea about the price as it was an "included" meal. It was crowded, Sama Sebo on a Saturday noon was not, but may be during the week.

Correct spelling is rijsttafel. "rijst" = rice, "tafel" = table

Kantjil & The Tijger is the best restaurant in Amsterdam to eat a rijsttafel for sure!!
Leo from Holland
Mouth is watering--yum!! Has anyone ever found an authentic restaurant in the U.S. for rijsttafel?

I ahve posted a long comment on Kantjil & The Tijger in the rants/raves section of this site and will not repeat it.

Briefly I was not impressed. There was no atmosphere and all the things tasted alike and they weren't anywhere as good as the asian food we can get in Chicago. As I understand it Samo Sebo is the way to go.

What is Rijstaffel ?

elvira Jul 12th, 2001 11:55 AM

Rijstaffel is a banquet served at your table with this huge assortment of Indonesian dishes and sauces. It's a wonderland of tastes, textures, smells, colors....

Oh great now I'm really hungry!
