Rijksmuseum shut down

I have recently learned that the Rijksmuseum is shutting down for an indefinite period due to an asbestos problem.

We're going to Amsterdam in May...OH NO!!!!!!!!
Where did you see the news?

quebec Apr 29th, 2003 12:25 PM

I read it on the BBC and followed up with the Rijksmuseum's website. They may not be closed for long. But who knows?

In answer to my own question I found this on the following site:

http://www.rijksmuseum.nl

28-04-2003 In consultation with the factory inspectorate, the management of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam has decided to close the whole Rijksmuseum building for the public and the staff from tomorrow. The reason is that asbestos has been found in parts of the Rijksmuseum. Further investigation will be needed to establish precisely which parts of the Rijksmuseum are affected and what form of asbestos is involved.
Investigations have shown that the risk to members of the public who have visited the museum is absolutely neglible.

The asbestos investigation was part of a study being carried out for the Government Buildings Agency in the context of the upcoming renovation and restoration of the Rijksmuseum.

The Rijksmuseum management informed its personnel of the situation this afternoon. It is not yet known when the Rijksmuseum of parts of it will be reopened to the public.

According to the museum's website only the Philips Wing remains open to the public. Perhaps the website hasn't been updated.
